I was very late to Downton Abbey, a friend recently suggested I binge watch it and that's what I did, I absolutely loved it.

Someone on here then recommended The Other Bennet Sister followed by Larkrise to Candleford and I thoroughly enjoyed both of them. It's good binge watching them because sometimes I forget who people are and the relationships to one another!

Can anyone recommend another period drama that I could watch, please?

Just thought -remember the Jeeves and Wooster with Stephen Fry? I'd love to see that again ☺️

As I couldn't find any more episodes of Cranford, I've started watching The Hardacres, but it isn't in the same league as the other period dramas. I'll stick with it, but it's a bit 'am dram'.

Oh I forgot 'Fortunes of War' with Emma T and Kenneth B

My all time favourite is the afore mentioned 'David Copperfield' with dear little Daniel Radcliffe as young David.

I don’t remember seeing that. Just watched a programme about it with Zoe Wanamaker on iplayer.

I've watched Cranford over the last couple of days and really enjoyed it. There were 5 episodes in series 1, but only 2 episodes in series 2, I think there must have been more, but that's all there is on U 🤔.

The Forsyth Saga with Damian Lewis as Sommes.
The original was good but this take on the family is superb.

When I first found out that Damien Lewis was playing Soames I was very doubtful but he was absolutely amazing, I loved the series and it is so much better than the offering on Channel 5 which I gave up after three episodes because of the story changes and the casting.

Nobody has mentioned P&P with Colin Firth .

The best version!!

I also like the BBC version of Sense and Sensibility

Daughter 3 likes Miss Scarlet. I'm not keen to watch TV, however, I've enjoyed a few episodes of Miss Scarlet with her.

Netflix is showing The Leopard, based on a classic Italian novel by Tomasi di Lampedusa. It concerns an aristocratic Sicilian family as it adapts to life during the 1860 Risorgimente. It is a stunning watch with no expense spared.
I recommend using English subtitles rather than the dubbed version which I found irritating.

Pride and Prejudice the 1995 series or Emma from 2008 I think it was.

I rewatched all the Poldark series last year with the lovely Aidan Turner ❤️

The Way We Live Now - a dramatisation of Trollope’s Victorian novel. IMO (as someone who’s red it more than once) excellently done, and featuring David Suchet (brilliantly!) as the supposedly super-rich fraudster Melmotte. A character so different from Poirot, it shows his superb ability as an actor.

It was a series on the BBC some years ago - well worth a watch.
Shirley Henderson is also brilliant as Melmotte’s daughter Marie.

I recently rewatched the original Poldark with Robin Ellis and Anthea’s Rees, a very different watch to the newer version, enjoyed both

I loved re-watching The House of Eliott on U TV. It's a shame it ended rather abruptly, but still very much worth watching.

Just remembered the Forsyte Saga. Both the old version from the 60’s with Nyree Dawn Porter and 2002 version with Damian Lewis as Soames. The books by John Galsworthy are also one of my favourite reads.

If you enter&, "where to watch such and such " *into your search engine

Then it will come up with which platform it is on, I player, ITV player, Netflix, Prime, Sky etc etc

Lark rise to Candleford is sweet, I like it better even than Cranford. Free on Channel 4, small cost other platforms.

There’s a collection of Jane Austen films on BBC IPlayer, from different decades to commemorate her birth. Well worth watching, you night have to use the search facility to find them.

I’m currently watching Little Dorrit on IPlayer.

That's great if Bleak House is still around as many Dickens dramas are no longer available. One of the best is David Copperfield (1999) with the most amazing cast, Daniel Ratcliffe (very young), Bob Hoskins, Nicholas Lyndhurst, Maggie Smith, Trevor Eve, Alan Armstrong, Michael Elphick and Pauline Quirke. It's on Amazon Prime and Apple for a modest fee.

MollyNew Sun 03-May-26 23:26:16

If you like adaptations of books, the BBC version of Bleak House with Gillian Anderson was very good, I'm planning to re-watch it. It's on BBC iPlayer.
