I was very late to Downton Abbey, a friend recently suggested I binge watch it and that's what I did, I absolutely loved it.

Someone on here then recommended The Other Bennet Sister followed by Larkrise to Candleford and I thoroughly enjoyed both of them. It's good binge watching them because sometimes I forget who people are and the relationships to one another!

Can anyone recommend another period drama that I could watch, please?

Has anyone mentioned The Jewel in the Crown?
Dr Finlays Casebook.
To Serve Them All My Days

Just spotted Dandelion Dead on You Tube. Michael Kitchen plays a 1920s solicitor Herbert Rowse Armstrong who poisoned his wife Sarah Miles.

Just thought -remember the Jeeves and Wooster with Stephen Fry? I'd love to see that again ☺️

Wyllow3 - episodes on youtube! we love the intro, the graphics and jolly spiffing music even before the mayhem begin, sets and clothes, excellent

Thanks for recommending A place to call home on Amazon Prime.
Fantastic and addictive.

😍😍 Definitely the best. I am waiting as long as possible to watch again as I'm hoping to forget it all!

Neither would I Jane43. I'm on series 2 and it's just as good.

It seemed to slip under the radar when it was screened, which is odd, as it has a high profile cast and I think it was very good. I was disappointed that there were so few episodes. The original series had hundreds of them. I enjoyed it as a child, but when I've caught an odd episode now I realise it is very dated. The newer one was much better I think. I'm pleased so many people liked it.

The Count of Monte Cristo. I suppose it’s a period drama. iplayer now.

It definitely is Jane43. It's a high quality BBC production with a distinguished cast.

I watched three episodes over the weekend and yes it is very good, not a remake of the original Upstairs Downstairs as I thought but later in time and very interesting content about the death of Edward VIIth then the abdication and also the rise of Oswald Mosley. Lovely to see Jean Marsh return as Rose Buck, I am looking forward to Series 2, I wouldn’t have known about it but for this thread.

Season 2 of The Hardacres starts at 9pm on Thurs 14th May Channel 5. I thought the first one was okay and I'm happy to watch a second.

I'm so glad I saw the recommendation of the new series (to me) of Upstairs Downstairs on this thread.

Me too, I will seek it out, I hope it’s better than The Forsytes on Channel 5.

*If you enter&, "where to watch such and such " into your search engine

Then it will come up with which platform it is on, I player, ITV player, Netflix, Prime, Sky etc etc

Lark rise to Candleford is sweet, I like it better even than Cranford. Free on Channel 4, small cost other platforms.

I just finished watching it, “it’s my only weakness”. 😀

Sheer perfection. It was as though they were both born to play the parts.

Of course they both appeared in Blackadder. Does that count as period drama?

Well, yes!

Selfridges is great. We also enjoyed Grantchester and the Count of montecristo.

Cranford was excellent- but I also loved Dickensian and wish they would do another series!

Dickensian was fantastic, I’ve watched it several times.

Pride and Prejudice the 1995 series or Emma from 2008 I think it was.

I rewatched all the Poldark series last year with the lovely Aidan Turner ❤️

I loved the TV Emma with Kate Beckinsale (before she had all that work done on her face) as Emma, and Prunella Scales (five star!) as Miss Bates. I’m afraid I’ve forgotten the name of the chap who played Mr Knightley so superbly, and ditto Harriet - she was brilliant.
IMO the production absolutely knocked spots off the Hollywood version with Gwyneth Paltrow.

Some really good ideas to look up here, I'm watching Mapp & Lucia at the moment as I'm off to spend a few days in Tilling soon. It's my perfect watch, just the right balance of cosy and spite!

I'd forgotten A Place to Call Home. I endorse the recommendation. It is brilliant.

Chestnut Wed 06-May-26 00:44:06

We are blessed. They have put A Place to Call Home on Amazon Prime (free to view). The period is post WW2, starting 1950s. It's the lives and loves of a very wealthy Australian family, absolutely addictive viewing.

This is the series to die for, the best ever I think. The costumes, the sets, the houses, the cars, everything is just beautiful, with a fascinating interwoven plot. It's 6 seasons and 67 episodes.
