National treasures. Who would you choose?

I don’t know if this has been done before, but as it’s David Attenborough’s 100th birthday today, who else do you consider to have this overused title? After Sir David, who I imagine is most people’s number one, I would say Michael Palin, Judy Dench and possibly controversially Joanna Lumley. I’ll probably think of more but they would be my top four.

I was watching a programme about Maggie Smith last evening.

My goodness what a good actor she was.

I do think we are blessed with some extraordinary individuals in the U.K. They can’t all be treasures, but we should treasure their contribution to our cultural life.

Yes, now I know what a national treasure is, probably not Mick Jagger, Chestnut.

^National treasures need to be respected, and some musicians like Mick Jagger and David Bowie were maybe a bit too scandalous to be described as national treasures^

National Oddities?

Surely Bowie would be a "Space Oddity" grin

I like David Attenborough and always have but every time I hear his name I remember a rather rude pastor at a church I used to go to (I no longer attend that one ) referring to him as David Rabbitburrow. He didn’t like him at all.
I think Helen Mirren is pretty good, anything she is in seems to be a good watch.

I find David Attenborough depressing and switch over every time I hear his voice. There's always some poor creature in desperate jeopardy.
The people who really turned me on to animals were (don't laugh) Beatrix Potter and then Johnny Morris. I loved Beatrix Potter's illustrations and still somehow hope, that out of our sight, the creatures live the cosy lives she described. As to Johnny Morris his voicing if the various animals was so funny and touching.
I know. I'm shallow.

I don't think anyone is a national treasure are lucky to be in the right place at the right time .David Attenborough is a good presenter but I think the camera men are the ones who make a nature programme good.

Chris Packham is a natural successor to Attenborough and I much prefer him anyway. So I would nominate him as a national treasure of the future!

Basgetti Tue 12-May-26 12:32:56

Not sure about Chris. Steve Backshall would be my nominee

Basgetti Tue 12-May-26 12:33:41
