Not sure if I'm i the right forum but I wanted to ask has anyone tried this new(ish) social media platform? Its an alternative to X. Any tips for using.

Aveline Thu 28-Nov-24 12:37:59

I do like Bluesky but I don't follow just anyone and happily block those with different ideas on gender. No nasty responses so far. It's all a bit jolly but I'm happy following various animal.and art threads.

Not if you are a woman who believes in single sex spaces it's not. Really unpleasant threatening content.

•*Bluesky is the best!*
• Substack is excellent for journalism content, if you’re into news, current events. I follow various English Substack writers too.
• Threads is okay, I’ve heard, but I’m not on it - used heavily by professional media.
• Facebook is full of ads and trolls - it has really lost its luster and reputation and they are doing NOTHING to fix it.
• Stay off of X, WhatsApp - becoming cesspools and the algorithms are very murky and conversations are being followed. All you need to do is hit one wrong link, and… (especially WhatsApp. Switch to Signal if you’re ONLY interested in sharing conversations. Signal has encryption for safety purposes.)
• There are countless other social media sites. Ones that promote right wing propaganda and those that promote left liberal progressive agendas. There are trolls on all sites but the really good sites do enforce their rules of clean, not violent, nasty, scary content. Stay informed, do your homework before signing on!
•*Bluesky is probably the safest to be on right now* - find your community on there and you can enjoy it once again.

Another good one is CounterSocial counter.social/index.html

No trolls, abuse, ads, fake news, foreign influence ops.

You have ''status'' instead of posts etc.

Free to join, only takes a couple of minutes for Registration and to set up a Profile.

Bluesky now has 21 million users and is growing fast. X is probably 500 million by now, down from about 800 million but who knows the truth of the X stats, apart from Elon and he isnt telling. I joined Bluesky about a week ago and deleted my X/Twitter account. There is less traffic on Bluesky, but so far its far more civilised. I can still follow Mary Beard and Sophie from Romania (Rory Cellan Jones dog) and other nice restful forums like Nature is Amazing and the Worlds best pics. The more political forums seem to be remarkably free of the sort of posts that make my blood pressure rise. I think its really worth supporting. The more it grows the better it will become.

Oh no not another one! I never got the hang of Twitter. Spend enough time on here as it is!

Aprilgem Fri 22-Nov-24 22:46:52

Thanks Aveline. Maybe one day we are allow to post pics on scenery, pets etc.. I like fashion, love to post something vintage and nostalgic things too.
Looking back at my post, I should have add, is it worth joining Bluesky? Also found out Facebook need a photo ID to join.
Take care all.

Aveline Fri 22-Nov-24 19:07:20

Once there was a thread where we could post pictures of ourselves. It was very interesting seeing what familiar posters actually looked like.

Aprilgem Fri 22-Nov-24 14:14:10

I do like coming here, so I can chat and find information straight away and talk about other things. Only thing we don't show is our face or ID.
Still a lot to learn.

MissInterpreted Fri 22-Nov-24 14:09:09

I'd say that forums like this are just another form of social media - just like Facebook, Twitter (X), Bluesky, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat etc. People don't always use their real names or identities on those either.

Aprilgem Fri 22-Nov-24 14:06:19

I have asked some of my friends just now. They use Facebook and LinkedIn. People use their identity, obviously showing their location, history, information about their family or friends, it is about connection. Also you can contact them and add them.
Gransnet, Mumsnet are social forums, chats. People here are anonymous, maybe one day become friends.
'NotSpaghetti' that is why I am confused with these new and old social sites or apps.

Aveline Fri 22-Nov-24 14:00:20

They are also social media along with GN and other forms

Aprilgem Fri 22-Nov-24 13:46:51

Thanks. When people talk about social media. Friends, family or colleagues always say Facebook, X, TikTok or Instagram.

BigBertha1 Fri 22-Nov-24 09:54:58

Thank you for responding I'm going to make time this snowy weekend to have a proper look at it.

Aprilgem isn't this a social media platform?

What do they think GN is 🤷‍♀️

NotSpaghetti Fri 22-Nov-24 08:28:48

...should have said Aprilgem and others

I have just joined Bluesky and am building up a list of people to follow. Pleased to see that my local council are there, my local political party and some other people that I followed on X. will have a look at Threads as well.

Aprilgem Thu 21-Nov-24 23:05:21

Hi. I'm not on any social media, platforms, worth joining?
Finding information, news, posting pics? User friendly?
Thanks.

Pittcity Thu 21-Nov-24 12:34:43

I left Twitter when it became X.
I am on Threads and Bluesky, mostly reading and joining in chats now and then.
Both are evolving and time will tell.

Jane43 Thu 21-Nov-24 12:23:02

I dont use any platforms but I do hope that there is a really viable alternative to X because of the use that Musk has made of it personally to try and intervene politically in the UK.

I agree. I am trying to deactivate my account on X but it keeps saying there is a problem and to try later. I can delete the app but I want to disassociate myself from X.

Shinamae Thu 21-Nov-24 11:38:21

The only thing I’m on is WhatsApp I stay away from the other platforms…

I'm on Bluesky and love it! It's very similar to Twitter and I love the little blue butterfly logo as I do with the little blue Twitter bird!

Only takes a couple of minutes for Registration and to set up a Profile.

There's also Bluesky Education so don't click on the wrong link as I accidentally do sometimes!
