I also read the article and I really felt for some of the people who contacted Silverline. I was pleased to read that the organisers have received lottery funding and that should keep them going for a couple of years.

I only heard about Silverline earlier today, on my local radio station. I believe it is a very valuable service, as loneliness is no fun. I try to keep busy as much as possible, but sometimes ,weekends especially , can be very lonely .

I heard E R on Radio 4 too. For some irrational reason I do not warm to her and find her irritating... and I have no idea why..feel the same about Meryl Streep.hmm

However Silverline sound like a positive concept!

I belong to the Townswomans Guild and our speaker last year and she spoke about starting Silver Line She has just moved in a flat and starting thinking about how lonely you can be and is hoping to have people to befriend lonely people and also to be able to ask if any services are needed She came to our meeting this year and said Silverline is going I found her interesting and funny

I read a very interesting article recently, it said that loneliness is stigmatised in its own right. That had never occurred to me.

I also spoke to a man who once was homeless for a time (25 years ago) who told me that "the loneliness was worse than the cold, the hunger, or the shame". sad

I heard an item about this on Radio 4 recently. There was a woman who had been involved in the pilot trial and she spoke eloquently about how good it was to be able to speak to someone with regard to how low she felt.

Have you read about Esther Rantzen's project to help older people who feel isolated and alone? They are looking for volunteers to befriend lonely people - as well as looking to reach out to anyone living a lonely life.

Esther Rantzen, the Chair and Founder of The Silver Line recently said: “The Silver Line is hugely grateful to Big Lottery Fund for enabling us to launch in time for Christmas, for many older people the loneliest time of the year. The Fund has recognised that millions of older people are lonely some or all of the time, but the loneliness carries a stigma which makes it impossible for them to ask for help. They have too much pride, and they do not want to be become a burden.

"At The Silver Line we believe older people have a great deal to offer, and deserve respect, and we have proved during our pilots that by offering information and friendship, we can support older people, and lift their confidence and self-esteem."
