A bit of a dilemma

Morning all,

I saw a job listed a week or so ago which seemed pretty much ideal. It appeared to be within my skill set, wasn't too far to travel and the pay was reasonable for this area.

It was listed with an agency that I had dealt with before, so I emailed Claire and let her know that I was interested. She got back to me yesterday to say that the company had put all recruitment on hold until January as they were currently too busy, and if I was still interested she would definitely put me forward then.

Now, in her email she actually said which company it was. So, I had a look at their website, found a section covering current vacancies, and lo and behold, there was the job!

So, what do I do, contact them direct, or leave it with Claire? I'm pretty sure that if I did contact them, they would get in touch with Claire and ask if I was one of her candidates, which could lead to problems.

Perhaps they have just neglected to update their site? Would your agency take offence if you approached the company direct?

Phoenix maybe they're also too busy to update the website!

If the agency had anything to hide, and she was fobbing you off, she wouldn't have mentioned the company name.

You could always give her another call and say that you've seen the website with the vacancies still up.

I like the last suggestion from Riverwalk as it keeps everything above board. Then if the agency still can't move things forward you could get in touch yourself.

Good point River & Scarlet smile

No, I trust Claire, she and her husband run their own recruitment agency and I have found them very good to deal with.

I think she would be a bit miffed if I went direct, as if I actually got the job, she might not get her commission, if you see what I mean.

I think that giving her a call would probably be the best way to go.

Thanks!

Oh phoenix If I were you I would contact the company by telephone if possible and tell them the truth.Say you have registered your interest with an agency you know and trust, who have told you the vacancy is on hold for the time being, however during your time researching the company you noticed the vacancy posted on their website and would "hate to miss the opportunity".

Then you are being open and honest. Good luck.

Good advice I think gillybob - no harm in checking "if it is still open" and if so "how to apply"
For all you know agency has had a falling out.... it can happen

OK, thanks for the responses, they are as always, appreciated.

Now, if I could ask you for a final bit of advice, who do I contact first, the agency, as suggested by Riverwalk or the company, as suggested by Gillybob ?

I think i would contact the company first. Then, if the job is still available, the agency.

After all if the job is available and they said it wasn't they made a mistake.

Could it be the company prefer not to use an agency for some reason?

Yes call the company.

It appears the company was only formed in 2012 and that they are recruiting for several key positions. Is it possible that they are not properly set up yet? If they are very busy, surely they would need these key personnel to be in post now?

Evening all!

I phoned the company yesterday. When I explained the reason for my call, the person that answered the phone put me through to Mike, one of the founders. Must say, I was impressed by the manner and professionalism of the way she handled my call, checked the spelling of my name etc.

Mike said he would get someone from HR to call me. They didn't, but he phoned me a while later and said that yes, they had decided to put the recruitment on hold until January as they were crazy busy with other stuff, and as they are a jewellery company, Christmas and the run up to it would be hectic.

Eleothan you are right to say they are a new company, and I got the feeling from Mike that they have only recently re-located to Devon, but given the nature of their business (mainly on-line) I completely understand their ethos and the way that that want to go with the business.

Shame they want to wait until January, but at least I have shown that I'm keen! grin

Unfortunately I have a feeling that they may be looking for someone younger sad I realise of course that they are not allowed to actually say that, however..............

I've recently bought some very nice jewellery on eBay from a Devon firm wonder if it's them?
