No - doesn't have yo be humanist, but the BHA run courses which was what the OP was seeking. I am sure that a lot of the course content could apply to other beliefs.

I was just going to say it doesn't have to Humanist too, Jane. DN was emphatically 'nothing' apart from socialist! My friend is also adamantly 'nothing'. Your DS's wedding sounds lovely! .

It doesn't have to be humanist.
DS and DDiL had a multi-faith celebrant for their wedding in Virginia.
It was a beautiful ceremony and the celebrant conducted the service with great sensitivity.
One of the parts I liked was that we, and DiL's parents, were invited to stand up at one point and vow that we would support them throughout their marriage. It seemed to recognise the importance of the wider family in helping young people cope with the difficulties that life is bound to throw at them.

We had a celebrant at my dad's funeral service.

She was absolutely brilliant and from beginning to end she was the most attentive, kind person I could have arranged his funeral service with. Nothing was too much trouble, she listened to dad's life story to understand and feel she understood the life and character of the person she was doing the service for. Nothing was off the table with regard to the words, songs, hymns , pattern of service, it was totally up to me as to how the service was carried out. I felt totally empowered as to how the day went.

I have only ever seen a celebrant at a funeral but I do believe it can be anyone who performs a ceremony be they Humanist , religious or civil as in a civil wedding ceremony..
Mishaps suggestion sounds like a good place to start.

British Humanist Association is what you need.

I've only been aware of Humanist celebrants. I assume there must be a regulatory body. I must say that the Humanist weddings and funerals I've attended have been terrific. I have always been impressed by the care and attention that each celebrant must have put in to preparing these events. They were all so personal. Good luck with becoming one lightshines

We had a Celebrant at my nephew's funeral who was brilliant! I think you would say they are sort of non religious people who take the place of vicars etc in what are traditionally religious services. But not Registrars either!

I have a friend who is a Celebrant but both her parents are ill at the moment so I'm not sure whether to ask her or not lightshines

Anya - this is the best explanation I can find.

It is basically a person who conducts ceremonies (eg funerals, namings, weddings) in a non- or semi- religious way.

Anya it means someone who leads a ceremony, could be a religious , humanist, or civil ceremonies so I understand it.
