I emailed Age UK a few days ago about volunteering opportunities in my area. This is the reply I've just received....is it me hmm

"Thank you so much for taking the time to contact Age UK about volunteering. We really appreciate it.

Sadly, around 60% of people in the UK aged over 65 aren't expecting festive happiness to be part of their Christmas this year. Your vital support will mean we can reach out to many more lonely older people.

We are very lucky to have received a huge number of volunteering offers recently, but this does mean it might take us a little longer than we'd like to get back to you, unfortunately.

We'll let you know about volunteering opportunities in your area as soon as we can. We would also encourage you to consider informal opportunities to help with social isolation in your area. This could be as simple as asking a neighbour round for a mince pie, writing someone's Christmas cards for them, or taking someone in later life Christmas shopping.

In the meantime, you might like to have a look at Your Time - the Age UK volunteer magazine we send twice a year to our volunteers - or join our campaign to tackle loneliness.

Thank you once again for offering to support Age UK - we simply couldn't help so many people love later life without our volunteers.

Very best wishes"

And it was signed by the Head of Volunteering in the UK

Should I reply and point out it's February? ....but it doesn't inspire confidence does it?

OK.

Age UK have totally blanked my email. So another one sent to their Managing Director (they don't have a CEO)

And then I'll be stopping my DD.

Anya
Have you tried your local community voluntary service? They have a vast amount of opportunities country wide. (smile)

Anya !!
I tried to volunteer for Age uk . I went into the shop to talk to someone but just got handed a leaflet about volunteering and a long form to fill in . Did you know you also have to have a Police check before they will take you ? I went round the corner to a local animal charity who were delighted and asked me to come in the next day to do a shift to see how I liked it . I am still there and yes I love it . I would suggest you try somewhere else x

I did get a reply to my complaint about using an out-of- date seasonal automated response.....another automated response but not a seasonal one ? Path-et-ic

From what I'm reading on this thread this is a charity that is inefficiently run, with poor communication, and lacking in good strategic leadership.

All these potential volunteers disregarded at best, alientated at worst.

AgeUK needs to get its act together starting at the top.

I closed down my monthly direct debit to them and redirected it to another charity.

Your experience with AgeUK chimes with mine, Anya. When we were clearing my MIL's house, we filled 4 or 5 bags with good quality donations for the first charity that posted a bag through the door - AgeUK. They weren't collected, so I rang the number on the bag several times. When someone eventually picked up, I was advised to ring the local shop, so I did. I was asked to ring two days later and speak to the manager, which I did. I was then promised that they would be out the next day to collect. When they didn't come I rang again and was promised they would be collected the following day. They weren't, and this time they got wet while we were out at work. I dried everything off and donated them elsewhere.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my research seems to indicate that Tom Wright, the Director of AgeUK earns about £190,000 which is more than David Cameron, which was about £150,000 if Google was accurate.

Allegedly wink

I did get to volunteer for Age uk for around 18months,in one of their new ventures,a charity shop, with a drop in information and advice centre in situ, the idea the shop funded the drop in,and the aim was to support the people of west Norfolk. There where several hardworking paid managers who where dedicated to their work in changing laws and challenging policies, but it was run by an inept board of trustees, who opposed anything that was to try and make things work more efficiently,I left as my expenses where becoming costly for petrol and parking, sometimes over £200 a month,it is alot of outlay for a volunteer

Hmm! I am wondering what to do when I retire next year? ( age72)
Age UK seem to be a no no!
My problem is that my mobility is very poor so I can't do home visits etc.
Suppose I could volunteer to give advice DLA/AA/PIP/ESA but tbh after having worked with these benefits for 39 years I think I'll never want to see another claim form!
Think I'll just concentrate on crochet, cruises and champagne!

annsixty Sat 27-Feb-16 15:13:46

Nice work if you can get it ?

Jalima Sat 27-Feb-16 15:21:52

Even now when I'm retired I write myself a memo every morning of 3 things I have to do, three I should do and three I might get round to doing if I can.

Actually I think that is a brilliant idea! I used to have a Bring Forward file at work and was going to start one when I retired, but I just ended up procrastinating bringing far too much stuff forward grin
As I went into town this morning and completed three (small) things I had to do does that count as three - or does the visit into town only count as one?

Caretaker Sat 27-Feb-16 21:50:42

It is a standard letter that has just been sent out to you without a hint of common sense, age UK will now put you on their begging list ans start asking you for money. Disgraceful of them.

Anya Sat 27-Feb-16 22:16:04

That counts as three Jalima grin - they don't have to be big things, in fact it's often the little things that mount up and cause problems.

Think Galen should take over the leadership of AgeUK!!!

Jalima Sun 28-Feb-16 10:39:24

Great idea Anya (although she may not want to!)
grin

Galen could wear her pearls, and would look stunning in the photo shoots smile

Galen Sun 28-Feb-16 13:24:50

Which set though?
I bought another string ( baroque ones ) on the last cruise!blush think I'm addicted to pearls.
Seriously, I wouldn't touch Age UK with a barge pole

downtoearth Sun 28-Feb-16 14:38:47

but you dont travel on barges Galen you go on cruises grin

downtoearth Sun 28-Feb-16 14:41:18

Age UK could benefit from your pearls of wisdom galen grin

pompa Sun 28-Feb-16 17:00:57

I was a paid employee of Age Concern for 6 years, employed as a carer in our local day centre. Having previously been in manufacturing, I was stunned at the money they wasted and how poor their management was, it would never be accepted in the private sector.
I would like to think that it has improved since the merger with Age UK, but I suspect not.

Galen Sun 28-Feb-16 18:01:37

downto
Agreed but I do have a boat hook and a spinnaker pole somewhere

Galen Sun 28-Feb-16 18:03:10

Anyway, the river cruise boats are just posh barges!
( not that I'd go on one, prefer the sea )

jogginggirl Sun 28-Feb-16 18:24:44

Galen
The three C's
Love it!

grin

Anya Sun 28-Feb-16 22:40:03

Somewhere Gaken? you mean you've mislaid your boat hook and your spinnaker pole - how very careless of you confused

Anya Sun 28-Feb-16 22:40:55

....sorry, but the 'k' is next to the 'l'....
