Last year my friend went to register the death of her partner of 23 years. A young man in the Registrar's office told her she wasn't allowed to as they weren't married. He was 82 and she 73. It made her grief so much worse. A relative stepped in only to be told that actually she was allowed to register his death as she was present when he died. The damage to her state of mound was already done, just because a man didn't know his facts.

What a load of rubbish, Ruby {the stupid woman in the council offices, not you!}. Neither of my sons came back during term time, and I didn't expect them to unless there were any problems. Hope you're feeling better now - enjoy the peace and quiet flowers

I had to take a letter of proof into a council office today and was met by a staff member who thought it in her interest to tell me what would be the outcome of me taking in my letter. It was the student form to say that my son is at University. She then went on to say that if he had not come back so far (three weeks!) then he had left home for good and was not coming back. She wanted to know where he did his washing, for Heaven's sake! I did get annoyed as it's a bad day today, health wise, not very good at all and ordinarily I would not have ventured out at all but the date to get the letting in was today, so I had to go. It cost me £8 in a taxi to take me as my car is off the road. I did tell her that I had brought it in for evidence and could she just photocopy it and send it through for me. She huffed away to the photocopier.

I then phoned the Town Hall and told them about their "helpful" staff. The lovely lady I spoke to there assured me that I had nothing to worry about with regards to my benefits due to him being at University and three weeks is no time at all to be away without having come home.

Bloody jobsworth. angry
