Many thanks grannyactivist! I will take a look at all your links. I have scoured the legislation lists and looked under Post Office, Telecimmunications, Telephones etc but nothing seemed to be what I was looking for. There seemed to be many Statutory Instruments and suchlike to read through and update the training with in the 60s! I did find several under Telegraph - will look again at the contents of these in more detail. I will enjoy looking at the YouTube videos. Many thanks again.

No time to properly research this for you, but you may find this film helpful www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbukoDhZ-F0, also BT has an archive that could be useful; www.btplc.com/Thegroup/BTsHistory/Eventsintelecommunicationshistory/index.htm and if all else fails you might want to trawl through the Statutory Instruments list, where I think (not sure about this) the telephony department came under 'Telegraphy'. www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/telegraphs?title=The&page=6. Hope you find what you need. smile

Hi Floradora9 - thank you for your response and how great it is to communicate with a fellow telephonist! We did indeed have to sign the Secrets Act - I remember that well. I trained new telephonists and remember having to read Statutory Intruments and updating training data accordingly. I remember having to train telephonists to monitor telephone conversations for foul language for example, and how to deal with 999 calls but cannot find any instructions to do so now in any documents. I want to be sure of what I am telling people when I give my talk and would feel happier with some legislative back up!! Thanks for your response. We had an amazingly high standard of training didn't we??!!

I cannot think of anything apart from the Official Secrets Act . I worked in London im the 1960s in the staff branch for telephonists . I did all the HR stuff , wages etc. for two London telephone exchanges . It was an interesting job .I am sure we had to sign the Official Secrets Act .

Hi All - I noticed there was a thread on this subject but it has not been added to for ages so thought I would start anew. I was a telephonist in Basingstoke in 1962 - 1968 and am looking for the legislation that we worked under - i.e. the Act of Parliament or the Statutory Instrumetns that applied to us then. I have been asked to give a talk on my work at this time and want to research the legislation. I can find a 1969 Act but that was after I left. Any help would be appreciated. Kind regards to all fellow 1960s Telephonists!!
