Fresh air, furry cuddles and adoring eyes! And you get paid, no wonder your sister is jealous. Enjoy your job and take no notice,
sounds like she just likes a good grump.

Jane you made me laugh. I will just spend my time with the wagging tails.

MissAdventure Tue 30-Apr-24 08:03:20

The subtle approach, eh, Jane? grin

JaneJudge Tue 30-Apr-24 08:00:56

So it is a job you are even qualified for smile I think I'd be inclined to tell her to piss off

Georgesgran Tue 30-Apr-24 07:59:14

It’s definitely a job Macadia and one you like doing. I wonder if your sister isn’t just jealous, but thinks you should be spending your free time with her?
Easy to say you should rise above the unpleasantness, but you are running a business that sounds ideal for you and your clients and I think she’s envious that you’ve been pro-active.

My sister is a hard worker and does work full time. I do have certifications, as well. Now that I think more about it, I just realized that she makes fun of all of my professions. Oh well. I clearly see this pattern now.

It's not a job I would be able to do, I'm sure.

It's a really fortunate position to have a job you love, and no doubt best for the dogs.

Does your sister work?

JaneJudge Tue 30-Apr-24 07:52:57

Animal care is a job and people even gain qualifications in it and everything smile

Thank you everyone for your advice, confirmation and ideas. Yes, welbeck I think I will agree with her rather than arguing. It does make her statement seem rather silly. I argued once but that didn't work. Jealousy? I hadn't considered that. I was beginning to wonder if I was wrong because she kept correcting me. Yes, Georgesgran I claim this income, am insured and paying my taxes like a proper business. My sister is a bit older than me and does enjoy an argument and upsetting me or others when she has had a bad day. I will try these suggestions to see if that stops her mocking me.

"Do a job you love, and you'll never work a day in your life".

You evidently enjoy looking after the dogs or you wouldn't be doing it would you? But you are providing care for the dogs, so in effect you are working.

I think your sister is jealous, she's either seething that she didn't think of doing it before you or she is possibly doing a job she doesn't particularly like and envies the fun you clearly have with the dogs.

Just carry on doing what you do, rise above your sisters envy.

You run a business, which is most definitely work.

Does your sister work, as in paid employment?

I think I would reply, 'and I get paid for it too. Aren't I lucky!

When I worked as a teacher I had several older acquaintances (who had never worked) who never failed to comment on the amount of holiday I had, and I always responded with 'yes, and I'm paid for it as well' which added fuel to the flames.

Looking after numerous dogs is hard work! At one point we had 10 and it was almost a full time (unpaid) job to take them out, in groups, two or three (summer nights) times a day, plus feeding, etc.
Personally, it does sound as if your sister is jealous, for whatever reason, best known to herself. You don’t say how old either of you are, which could be a factor?
I assume you are properly insured, declaring this income and paying the necessary tax?

Doodledog Tue 30-Apr-24 06:59:14

Yes, it sounds like jealousy to me. Of course you are working if you are being paid to provide a service. Alternatively you could tell your sister that you are what the government calls ‘economically active’. Or just roll your eyes when she starts her nonsense.

Curtaintwitcher Tue 30-Apr-24 06:23:43

You provide a service....people pay you for it...that is a job. The same applies to prostitutes, they are classed as 'working girls'. They provide a service, men pay for it.
Why are people so spiteful? Your sister probably envies you!!

BlueBelle Tue 30-Apr-24 05:18:50

You know the answer Macadia you don’t need the confirmation of us or your sister I wouldn’t even bother responding ….why would you?

welbeck Tue 30-Apr-24 03:07:04

just say,
i know, isn't it wonderful that the owners pay me for not working.
shall i give you their details, perhaps you could make some extra money doing a non-job too.

I had to end my job in engineering to take care of my husband at home and so, to earn a small income, I take care of other people's dogs when they go on holiday. I have a good client base, I care for only 1 - 5 dogs at a time. I play with them, feed them, clean up after them, take them on walkies and make sure they feel loved. If I check my schedule to find my day off from work and mention to my sister that I am working on a particular day, she always snaps back at me saying, "You are NOT working - you just take care of dogs." I find that rather rude and I do believe this is a job that I am hired to do but I don't ever know how to respond so I just keep silent. Do you agree with my sister that I am not working because I am home or am I correct that this is indeed "work". I don't understand why she says this. Do you have any suggestions on a better response than silence?
