New beginnings for me

I’m slightly bemused that after a long and illustrious career in the civil service my adventurous husband has decided to start up his own company - a decision I totally supported him in making, but........in addition to having elderly parents, a large family and running a homelessness charity - I am now a junior partner in our new business! ?

I’m excited, especially as the business has got off to a flying start with some big-name clients already seeking us out (when I say ‘we’ I mean my amazingly modest, but super talented husband - I’m strictly backroom), but I imagined that at the age of 67 I would be thinking about retirement.

So, who else has started something new and unexpected in your later years? And how’s it going?

Just wanted to wish you all the best.

I became self employed in my fifties, so not as late as your husband, but I loved it.

Good luck to you.

DH retired and started a new business the day after. He's very happy as it involves something that was a hobby anyway and has grown and grown. The extra income on top of his pensions is nice too.

Good for you GA, and best of luck. I hope you are not overwhelmed.

I'm still working, but hope to start something new when I retire from my regular job. Maybe volunteering, perhaps a new job doing something quite different, but not too much responsibility.

Hi ga, best wishes for your husband's new venture.

DH retired at age 59 and worked for another 12 years in a new venture. Guess who was his right hand woman.

Thanks all for your encouraging comments.

I should say that my husband is ten years younger than me and is a specialist in his somewhat unique field. He’s hoping to work a four day week so we can have long weekends (looking after one of our grandchildren on Fridays), but how we can do that when I have two jobs I’m not really sure.

Fortunately I’ve always taken a keen interest in his work and so I’m well placed to assist with some aspects of it, but I do also wonder if my brain is as sharp as it needs to be. Today we sat down with the new computer and went through the filing system together and I had a real ‘eek’ moment of wondering what on earth I’m doing! ?

Lovely news GA, well done to the pair of you. It will keep you young, and don't worry about computer programs, familiarity breeds contempt!
