Specsavers' hearing tests - the verdict

hearingaids Earlier this year, several gransnetters put their local Specsavers branches to the test - the hearing test, that is - by visiting for a check up. Our very own gransnetter Grannyhaggis tells us about her experience when she popped into her nearest branch.

"When I got the go-ahead from Gransnet to have a hearing test, I popped down to the Specsavers branch on Fitzroy Street in Cambridge and explained why I wanted an appointment. I was then asked if I'd like a free hearing check which would take about three minutes. Unsuprisingly, the test indicated hearing loss in both ears so I arranged a full hearing test, which was free too.

A few days later my full hearing test was carried out by the lovely Toby. The results showed that I would definitely benefit from hearing aids and he went on to explain the options and procedure in great detail but thankfully did not hurry me into making a desicion about getting the aids.

I was a bit apprehensive about getting hearing aids - I hate anything in my ears! But when I saw the size of them (tiny) I was so relieved. Toby explained how they worked, and showed me how to put them in my ears. They made a huge difference and I was amazed at how poor my hearing had become. I came out of the branch with a huge smile on my face, goodness only knows what the people in the street thought I'd been up to!

I have an appointment with Toby at the end of April to check up on how I'm getting on with the aids. The aftercare was explained to me when the aids were fitted and I was also shown how to look after my aids in terms of cleaning and changing batteries and I feel sure that I could go and ask for help if I needed it.

I'm getting used to my hearing aids now, and certainly notice the difference if I don't have them in. I didn't hear a text coming through this morning when I wasn't wearing them and can now usually hear messages if I'm in the other room (I don't normally go without my aids, but was doing a bit of a spring clean and didn't want to be deafened by the vacuum!). I have noticed that I can now hear things much more clearly and distinctly even in a crowded room.

Not only did I notice the difference outdoors, but when I came home I could hear the radio and TV without the sound being turned up. I could even hear my mobile ringing in another room and in my bag. I can honestly say I'm glad I took the plunge. They are very small and fit unobtrusively behind the ear, so nobody notices them. I'd recommend a test to anyone who's worried about their hearing. It's improved my life immensely!"
