'Jimmy Savile' and his 'teenage victims' win 3rd prize at Border procession competition.

This isn't just me, is it? How on earth was this allowed to take place and also WIN third place? I don't know how to put up a newspaper link, but every year in the Borders there are processions (Ridings) which date back hundreds of years. On one of the floats one man dressed up as Jimmy Savile and other men as his teenage victims. I don't think it's at all appropriate. People from the Border town of Lauder were interviewed on the street for the Scottish news and all of them thought it was only a 'bit of fun', and did no harm. NO!! angry

I suspect that Frank, whoever or whatever he is, who has been sailing close to the wind for some time now, has finally overstepped the mark with a desire to shock and to provoke dissent.

Let's face it, GransNetters can create dissent without much external intervention!

Well unless someone repeats what was offensive, we'll have to leave it, guessing won't get anybody anywhere.

"we will remove posts we believe to be obscene, racist, contain personal attacks or break the law".

Or that some people just don't like???

Tegan Sat 10-Aug-13 13:11:36

Oh, and I can only second what gracesmum has said about the riding out ceremonies..they are truly wonderful.

Ana Sat 10-Aug-13 12:51:52

Yes - it's the prize-awarding that amazed me.

Tegan Sat 10-Aug-13 12:47:37

Disgusted as I am by what they did, the people involved were very young. I don't think I was very socially aware when I was that age sad. But the people who gave the award should have known better [or indeed anyone older and wiser that knew of what they were planning].

Hmm.

I would still love to know which of the forum rules he contravened. The deletions seem to be getting a bit willy-nilly. I did n' t see this latest one, but we can usually sort Frank out ourselves. wink

Ana Sat 10-Aug-13 12:35:49

A whole thread he started was deleted yesterday, jing! Perhaps it's Frank who should be a bit more cautious...?

j08 Sat 10-Aug-13 12:25:44

Is someone being a bit over cautious?

j08 Sat 10-Aug-13 12:24:11

I can't believe Frank posted anything that really warranted deletion. I wonder which of the forum rules he actually broke.

gracesmum Sat 10-Aug-13 11:39:13

I agree that it is absolutely crass. However, let us not tar all the Bordres Common Ridings with the same brush. Many go back hundreds of years - to Flodden (Selkirk) or even earlier including Lauder which is one of the oldest. This Fancy Dress parade is a modern "add-on" and nothing to do with the heart of the festival (although part of the week's events) and there must be some very red faces among the organisers at this manifestation of appalling insensitivity and poor taste. I dont know what was said in a previous (deleted) post and frankly - I do not want to. angry

Speechless!

whenim64 Fri 09-Aug-13 22:09:39

Frank your comments are ill-informed and lacking in any hint of compassion. Money does not motivate everyone!

The picture in the link of all those men looking completely ridiculous showed what a very stupid thing it was to do. The fact that they won 3rd prize compounds the insensibility of all involved. Silly, tasteless and crass.

Marelli Fri 09-Aug-13 20:38:36

Neither can I, absent. Better to ignore really, if they didn't actually ban it.

absent Fri 09-Aug-13 19:57:06

Singularly tasteless and not actually very well done either. I wouldn't ban a group of people from doing this, although I might suggest that it wasn't a good idea, but I cannot understand the awarding of a prize.

The McCanns thing is even worse*Marelli*! Sick!

It's as if - "Oh well, it's in the past now - let's have a laugh about it!" I notice there were no women involved in the group. I find it so hard to understand how anyone could think it could be entertaining - and surely the women in their families would have tried to deter them from doing this? hmm
It reminds me of when my friend's DGD and her boyfriend dressed up as the McCanns for Halloween. They put their photos on Facebook. I didn't discuss it with my friend and she didn't mention it either - I'm pretty sure she was as disgusted as I was.
