AIBU to have been shocked to read that, until she was in the film, Carey Mulligan didn't know that suffragettes were beaten and force fed. She thought they went on nice marches, waving banners, and obviously knew nothing about the infamous Cat and Mouse Act. If girls aren't being taught about this it's no wonder that they put so little value on the right to vote and seem to enjoy knowing nothing about current affairs.

I think it irritated me that Meryl Streep played Mrs Pankhurst cause I kept thinking that she was doing her 'Margaret Thatcher voice'. And the 'racehorses' looked very fat.

Great link, trisher, thanks for that.

I was moved by Maud's rage about what had happened to her (avoiding spoilers here) and what was happening to another girl at the laundry. That, I think, is very realistic.

I think it should be compulsory viewing in schools, just to get kids interested so they find out more. The film only just scratched the surface and I think it could have been two, maybe even three films.

It wasn't a documentary, it was a good story based on fact, and as such I enjoyed it very much, apart from a niggle at the end when Maud was reading by the light of one candle - which was below the book so no light was shining on the page!

My Gran was a suffragist and Grandad a staunch supporter, so I learnt the history and the difference between suffragettes and gists at an early age. I would never dare not vote!
