Just a matter of personal taste

Have just read so many moans on here about textured wallpaper and have recently had my daughter quoting her ‘expert’ friend who claims I should totally redecorate my house (she hasn’t seen it) even though I’ve only recently spent money on it. In fact, before said unexpected advice, I was just starting to like the small, 50s house I bought following my divorce and had started to feel proud to show it to guests. . I’m crap at DIY and so have paid a couple of different professionals to decorate - generally one room each year. The decorators stripped the old patterned wallpaper but replaced it with textured wallpaper they could paint over. You can tell it was a professional job, especially in the living-room which (I think) looks really elegant.. In two of the rooms, I’m also really glad I’ve slightly rebelled against the complete ‘neutral’ (= beige) fashion by insisting that some part of the room, even if it’s the carpet, has to be a different colour (beige carpets are a nightmare with a dog, in any case). To my mind, it’s all about the end result so I don’t intend to be a slave to interior design fashions any more than I am to clothes. Neither am I narcissistic enough to imply that my taste is the only ‘good’ taste - only that it’s right for me. So anyone who disagrees or who feels like bitching about my house when they visit knows what they can do.

Personally I like some textured wall paper.. but textured wall paper thats been painted over always looks awful IMO however you might hate my tastes and we dont need to live in each others houses wink

The worst thing about painted over patterned wall paper is that its so hard to strip/change and often means re plastering

But if you never intend to change it then so what? It can be someone elses problem in the future

I mean textured

It was this that we particularly liked, even though the paper has been painted over.

Yes. Looks nice. Better than just flat white.

I have the whole kit 'n' kaboodle here.
Artex and woodchip everywhere!

It was like it when I moved in, so not my doing, but its so expensive to have it skimmed, and I'm honestly not that concerned.

As a compromise, in the hall/stairs I’m thinking of replacing the Anaglypta with flat lining paper (which evidently can also be painted over).

My DD is busy painting her house in grey of various shades. I've said it looks like '50 Shades of grey' lololol

I had one ceiling professionally done as it was that anaglypta in a zigzag pattern. I don't mind anaglypta if the pattern is not offensive I hate zigzags and this was on my bedroom ceiling so it really mattered to get rid. Otherwise I did my whole house with labour saving and cleaning in mind to no carpets. It's great that we feel free to express our own tastes!
