What I want to be when I grow up

I secretly dabbled with the idea of interior design but no one took me seriously in late '50s early '60s. So I went into nursing - for all the right reasons of course! I was impressed with the good-looking doctors during the open day at the teaching hospital. I fancied myself in a red-lined cloak... and finally I was won over by the fish and chips, apple pie and ice cream lunch which was on offer that day! It wasn't my dream career but it was interesting if hard work and I think I became a good nurse

In very hot weather I sometimes at work went knickerless.-under a very sedate exterior dress.
It's also a good idea if you're suffering from thrush!

My DH thinks I was born old and has mentioned, on occasions, that I do things back to front. So if that's the case, I should be on well on my way to 'childhood' when I start collecting my pension! Does that mean I'm growing down?

When I grow up I want to stop growing !!!! There is more of me now than there was 10 years ago, where has my waist gone ?

I think that should read I did eventually go on to teach....

Having danced from the age of three, I wanted to be a Ballerina, unfortunately I didn't grow tall enough (only 4' 10") and wasn't really the right physique. I did eventually went on to teach ballet and tap, although I have now retired from that. I am choreographer for a couple of local amateur societies but no longer perform. My ambition is to enjoy life - no matter what!!

When I grow up I would like to be a musician or a singer please

Since my music teacher laughed at me when I auditioned ( everyone had to) for the school choir I have not sung a note if anyone else can hear me ( except in classrooms with the kids or when v drunk!). I sulked in music lessons after that so never learned to read music properly. Big regret

I wanted to work on a boat but couldn't until age 21 by the I was married

I wanted to go to Art College at interview they said if no good after 6 months have to leave. My mum said 'what else do you like doing?' I said "embroidery" so I ended up doing City & Guilds domestic science course. It didn't lead to a job but the knowledge of food science in these days of food fads has stayed with me. I can make a mattress, a lampshade, cook for 50, clean a Georgian House..

I was a hotel book-keeper receptionist for many years. Married had 3 children, was a croupier, did a humanities degree, civil servant, ended up in a call centre and couldn't wait to retire

In my spare time I did organic farming, followed pre celtic customs, school pta, lunches,cleaning.....

in 12 years been on 10 committees (5 at once) played bingo, health visitor for 3 years, worked my way thro' archaeoloogy, history, skittles, boules, bridge, rummykub, mahjong, family history, the list goes on WI.... I grasp something do in depth, do to death and move on to something else....nearing 72 I now watch tv and am getting addicted to granset!

OK Nanachrissie you and I will go for it - where shall we start? Time is short, we have to bite the bullet and become un boring old f**ts. On the other hand, regressing has its upsides having watched the 2 year old leading her mummy a merry dance all day - I do fancy a bit of foot stamping, opening the mouth as wide as possible and howling for no good reason

I don't really want to grow up either - I just keep putting it off but if I have to, I would like to be a classical musician or an opera singer - trouble is, I only did piano to Grade 6, can't play any other instrument and the voice is going - but there's always hope......
I was always a very buttoned-up child, afraid to do anything that wasn't allowed or was frowned upon, so maybe I could regress and do all the things I didn't do as a child??

susiecb our parents must have been in collusion because I was also forbidden from becoming a journalist as it was considered VERY disreputable.

My school suggested teaching, so I immediately did a secretarial course in order avoid such a terrible fate - and in due course did an OU degree, a teaching qualification and became a primary teacher for 30 years!

I've given up being a grown-up, as after trying it for a while I decided it was definitely over-rated

I don't want to grow up. I used to think I wanted to. In fact at one point I thought I was. Then I reached 50 and I thought of all those things I'd never done because I was grown up. Grown ups have to set an example and worry about what other people think of them. Children just have fun.

So if it doesn't offend or hurt anyone now I just have fun regardless of whether people approve of my childish behaviour. In the last three years I have rediscovered the fun of cycling, splashing in the sea (the North Sea lol), leaf fights, muddy puddles, building sandcastles, eating icecream in winter, rock pooling, tickling, making cola volcanoes (put a minto in a bottle of coke...do it outside and stand well back lol) and much, much more.

Well, I think your HM was right on two counts!
