He has come on the Tv last night or two I think advertising something . Suppose a new CD , couldn't be bothered to listen , so muted.
I am probably among the very few who are not keen , don"t know why as he is relatively inoffensive , but he really grates on me. {as for being the British Elvis } in your dreams !
Same goes for McCartney with his dyed hair --- give it up , your voice has gone .
Hmmmm

I admire their physical stamina, carrying on after their 'best before' dates envy ?

henetha Sat 30-Nov-13 12:26:24

I feel a bit sorry for them now after all that..... sad

Aka Sat 30-Nov-13 11:02:32

I've never seen a possum but that doesn't mean they don't exist Katy wink

I have been to a few of Cliff's concerts, I have never seen a geriatric or a zimmer. Cliff is 73, so most of his fans are a bit younger than him, it would be a shame if people under the age of 70 are considered geriatric.

celebgran Sat 30-Nov-13 09:39:14

Ginny if you saw cliff live I doubt you would say he has gone off but I do agree may be best for him to quit before he does !

We saw him last about 3 years ago i. Birmingham and it was fantastic he played his old songs!

Brucie is ridiculous.now so sad that he does not know when to quit.

celebgran Sat 30-Nov-13 09:36:07

Cliff has been a superstar for his whole career like him or loathe him he can still fill huge venues.

I AM a fan, but even I agree he must retire gracefully soon! Oh booked take me to Belgium to see him next year on Eurostar with all our travels we. N
Ever been on that!

I don't like the way he is so conceited ! He. Never used to be like that.

First saw him at palladium when I was only 16! It was so exciting.

Elvis was into a damaging lifestyle and could not handle his fame I presume but he did have lovely voice.

Was never into Paul McCartney but realise his time is gone!

ginny Sat 30-Nov-13 09:32:04

I used to love Cliff but, yes he has 'gone off' now. Agree about Macca, Rolling Stones, Monty Phython. Then there is 'Brucie ' whose performance last week on Strictly was dreadful. Although they are not as old I would like to see the back of the Top Gear trio. Silly little boys !

He recently performed at Warwick Castle. It was a sell out, tickets cost nearly £100 each. Our avenue was between the castle and the designated car park. It was an eye opener watching a continuous parade of geriatrics, some on those walking zimmers (I kid you not) processing down our road. Hundreds and hundreds of them. It was akin to the Israelites leaving Egypt .

Returning to the original post concerning Cliff Richard, I have just heard that he will be a guest on Graham Norton's show next week. Yuuuuuk!!

It makes me feel SO happy! I hope he was wearing a check shirt at the time; I bet your fellow passengers still remember it as well.

janeainsworth Wed 20-Nov-13 23:00:11

Tegan We taught that song to DS at the same time that he was learning nursery rhymes.
We flew from Hongkong to London when he was about 3 and he entertained our fellow passengers with a strident rendition of the Lumberjack Song for some time blushshock

I've changed my mind [again]....am in tears...

penguinpaperback Wed 20-Nov-13 22:49:49

I did like Fawlty Towers, still do. smile

Tegan Wed 20-Nov-13 22:46:47

I think the Pythons were ground breaking but others have taken their place and humour has moved on. We only remember the really funny Python sketches, but there was a lot of rubbish as well. John Cleese is only funny by not being funny. Mind you, think I need to rewatch Monty Python and the Holy Grail [my favourite].

penguinpaperback Wed 20-Nov-13 22:41:10

Yes I heard the PM programme too janeainsworth.
OH did find Monty Python funny but I never have. confused

penguinpaperback Wed 20-Nov-13 22:35:30

feetlebaum Madeline Bell, I love her voice, so powerful.

janeainsworth Wed 20-Nov-13 22:35:24

Eloethan I don't think it's the looks that are being ridiculed - it's the vanity of not accepting that your time has been and gone.
Some young people were interviewed on the PM programme today, having listened to a re-run of the Dead Parrot sketch. Most of them found it deeply unfunny.
If John Cleese et al are going to make a succesful comeback, there will have to be some serious re-branding and re-writing of the script.

Eloethan Wed 20-Nov-13 22:21:13

I am not, and have never been, a huge fan of any of the people mentioned, and some I actively dislike, but I find several of the comments here quite cruel. What they all these people have in common is that they are older and most are trying in vain to hold back the years. That is hardly surprising because old age is certainly not revered and older people are often portrayed as slightly ridiculous. We should be careful of joining the bandwagon of ridiculing people for their looks. Some people wear very well, but most don't.

Speaking personally, I sometimes feel I am looking quite nice, and then I catch a look of myself in a mirror somewhere and think crikey, who the hell's that!

petallus Wed 20-Nov-13 21:55:40

Oh, Leonard!

alternativegran Wed 20-Nov-13 21:51:18

Joan Baez was my youth, didn't catch up with Leonard Cohen until later. There is a depth to them, and despite their age they can still sing

Tegan Wed 20-Nov-13 21:20:53

Cliff does look pretty daft these days I have to say. Leonard Cohen wins the prize for wearing well [probably from his days as a monk or whatever he was].

petallus Wed 20-Nov-13 21:14:59

I was in love with Elvis in my girlhood. Never liked Richards or McCartney.

Tegan Wed 20-Nov-13 19:55:58

I was going to agree about Paul McCartney but his new album is supposed to be very good [haven't heard any of it though so can't pass comment]. Also saw him in the programme about Elvis Costello and some of the songs they did together sounded pretty good. He is revered everywhere except her, so it's a case of prophets in their own country [or something like that]. As for the songwriting; imo all the best Beatles songs were his and Wings were [again imo] very underrated. He was the Beatle that took Wings on the road because he loved performing; and still does. So, in the words of the song 'Let Him Be'.
.....can't believe I've written this; my opinion of him has changed in the space of a few weeks confused. I'm sure he wasn't losing sleep over it...
