him to do was open the tin of Spam, yes, it is a bit tricky the pull ring does not always work, and using a tin-opener is really difficult on oblong tins, but resorting to the tool box!

Elegran Fri 23-Jan-15 12:48:48

I push the handle of a wooden spoon into the ring, and lever on that.

Without meaning to hijack !!
The tins of corned beef with the opening key were pretty dangerous.

Ex DH decided to make a corned beef sandwich at about 1am.
One badly sliced joint between the thumb and forefinger, 2 year old ds up out of bed, I had to drive and had to take ds with us, ... 3 of us sitting in A & E at 2am, amidst the drunks.

Ex DH was rather -stupid- careless anyway !!

Can someone confirm... my previous post should have had a strikethrough, should I have put 2 x hypens either side of the word. ???

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 23-Jan-15 13:59:18

Yes. Two dashes either end of the word/words.

Anya Fri 23-Jan-15 14:07:27

is it working?

Maggiemaybe Fri 23-Jan-15 14:39:17

My DH resorts to the use of his toolbox at the drop of a hat. He has no patience at all and not much commonsense. I had to wrest a hammer out of his hand the other day when we were having trouble replacing the starter motor for a light fitting in the cellar (yes, it took two of us). Goodness knows what he was going to hit with it.

OMG shock - I have just realised the possible implications of a cellar, a hammer, and a nagging wife with a life insurance policy. grin

Coolgran65 Fri 23-Jan-15 15:17:48

two dashes for strikethrough

tanith Fri 23-Jan-15 15:21:46

Just trying it

Corned beef.... Childhood memories of my mother flat out on kitchen floor, having sliced open her hand opening the tin, more than once. She always fainted at the sight of blood.
The most dangerous cans there are IMO sad
Love corned beef but not had any for years, must add to shopping list!
As DH only too keen to overdo anything using tools I try to avoid asking, the sight of him attacking a tin (whose ring pull had broken) with a monkey wrench still haunts me.....

We hate Spam, I buy Lancaster chopped ham and pork.
My cat`s latest food fad comes in little tins with ring pulls, you need the strength of Samson to open them! And yes, those corned beef tins with the wind round keys were absolutely lethal, they nearly always snapped off when only halfway round the tin.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 23-Jan-15 18:29:51

I like those corned beef tins. Something very satisflying about winding up a strip of tin. And then that ' silent shlurp' as you take the top bit away and wait for the beef to drop out. Was a bugger when it broke off part-way though.

rosequartz Fri 23-Jan-15 19:58:32

Yes, I quite liked doing it too, there was always that edgy feeling that it may go wrong and you could end up in A&E. Apparently lots of recorded accidents are (or were) from corned beef tins.

hildajenniJ Fri 23-Jan-15 20:06:38

I don't buy corned beef in tins any more. I get the sliced variety in the plastic packs. It is much easier and safer to open. I can manage ring pulls on other cans, the arthritis in my finger joints is not much of a problem yet.

Ana Fri 23-Jan-15 20:10:50

Sardine tins were bad too - with the old-type can openers (I've still got one!) it was a devil of a job to get round the corners without either spilling oil all over the place or cutting your hand when the lid finally gave way.

shysal Fri 23-Jan-15 20:10:52

I still have the scar on a finger from a corned beef tin accident on a Friday 13th many years ago! I wonder why it was decided that some canned meats couldn't go in a standard cylindrical can, they would still be easy to slice.
I seem to remember that Sainsbury's sold frozen Spam fritters recently. I don't know whether they were popular.

Nelliemoser Fri 23-Jan-15 20:32:37

Yes I have a scar on the third finger on my left hand from trying to cut bits of meat off a joint in the house where I was a mothers help. They had no decent knives at all. That was the Injury I referred to way back on this thread.

Nelliemoser Fri 23-Jan-15 20:39:29

Ah! It was KateK's thread I posted that on, not this one.

rubylady Sat 24-Jan-15 01:14:25

A tin of Spam hit the bin last week when the ring pull wouldn't work, the tin opener wouldn't work and the patience ran out. And I just fancied a butty with some on and some brown sauce. sad

PRINTMISS Sat 24-Jan-15 08:21:26

I buy the tinned corned beef because we like corned beef hash (oh! another very fatty/salt laden meal) and the individual slices of corned beef are rather expensive for this. Often have trouble with the key though, and since I sometimes have my food delivered, a key is not always attached. Have cut my thumb quite badly only once in all these years, must be good at something.

Lona Sat 24-Jan-15 08:48:20

I like Spam and corned beef and I've always found that my electric tin opener opens those odd shaped tons quite well.

daffydil Sat 24-Jan-15 09:32:30

Yes ana the problem with tinned sardines, mackerel etc is that it is almost impossible to get the contents out without spilling oil.

glammanana Sat 24-Jan-15 10:55:23

I always end up with juice all over me when I try to open these cans and have to get changed again or smell of fish all day hmmChanged from buying tins of Corned beef and now just buy loose slices from the deli counter, only OH likes it so I can buy just the right amount for a couple of sandwiches.

Katek Sat 24-Jan-15 15:35:42

Markies do a pack with only 3 slices which is fine for DH to make sandwich. Why am I posting about meat? I'm a vegetarian!
