Sorry, meant to add, yes Varian I was mindful of using the other phone. Bloody scoundrels!

I did thanks Ana - no other comments about this number but it did confirm that it's a UK mobile and provider Vodaphone. For anyone else who wants to check a mobile number:

Google the number as well, there are lists of dodgy callers and messages from people who've received such calls.

If you get a call like this and want to check by phoning your bank, be careful to use a different phone.

The scammers can give you the impression the call has ended and if you then call any other number from that phone, it gets redirected to them.

I've had a similar call. I never trust people who phone out of the blue and like you always check using a known contact number.

I've just had a missed call on my mobile and checked the voicemail:

A nice chatty London voice (female) says

Hello Mrs ...... my name is .... at ...... Bank, ..... Branch, can you please give me a call on .........

The number appeared to be a mobile beginning with 0777 so that made me suspicious. I phoned my bank on the known Telephone Banking number and they confirmed that no such call came from them.

I was almost tempted to call the number to give them a piece of my mind, but best not! After all, they know my mobile number, bank, and curiously, nearby but not nearest branch, so likely have my address.

Gawd, you do have to have your wits about you.
