Been gifted an iphone. Now what do I do with it?

My daughter-in-law gave me a new iPhone which is lovely of her. My current mobile is only one step up from an 80s brick and it's a bit temperamental. But now I need to make the new phone work. And I'm such a technophobe...

The first thing is that it needs a sim. I know that I won't use the internet on it much because I don't like small screens, so I just want to play music on it, and phone/text. Can anyone point me in the right direction? smile

Loads of videos on You Tube which should help. You could go into a phone store to get the SIM for the network you will be on. They will be used to helping beginners. I asked my local Vodafone shop to help me set up the basics then looked for tips on You Tube.
Good luck!

If you are near an Apple Store they are good at helping. Also, the Apple phone helpline is great, I had to phone them up to ask them how to put the SIM card in. They will talk you through any problems.

Find someone much younger who can do things which you have struggled with for ages by pressing one or two buttons. I have one next door. I only really use mine for whatsapp as I much prefer to use my house phone.

I ve just squired my first iPhone (a grandkids hand me down) and they are fairly easy to use you can get a sim only contract which gives you I think it's unlimited texts and calls ( I m a bit vague a s I m still on my old contract) Google or utube should help u enormously if you go into settings which is the grey cogwheel you can set most things up from there If you ask any specific things I or others might be able to help

Maybe your DIL will help and put your music on for you. I agree - go to whichever phone store you are using to get your sim card inserted and started. Or the Apple Store if near one. I find it useful to read the manual through then refer back if I'm unsure. You can find these online in Apple.

DH and I have our dc old iPhone 5s. O2 is our service provider and we have their cheapest SIM only contract which is about £9.70 per month. This provides much more than I could ever use in a month.

We took both phones to the O2 store where they happily transferred all information including photos from the old phones to the new phones without charge. I just said that we were technologically challenged, knew very little, and could they help us.

They will also download any Apps that you might want such as Facebook, Google, etc

The 6th form girls at a local school, ran a couple of classes, in the library, for people with phones, but who didn't know how to get the best out of them. A friend and I went along, and learned quite a bit.

Lots of good advice here, definitely SIM only and yes, the mobile shop will swap the SIM for you. If you can access an Apple Store book yourself onto one of their iPhone basic workshops, free of charge and really good for confidence. The help line is excellent, the staff unfailingly patient. Your family will help. You will be fine smile.

Finding a grandchild to set it up for you is a good idea because you can go round in circles in set up
Once it’s set up it will be great .

Get a Smarty SIM card, very cheap and if you don't use all the data you get a refund each month, mine only ends up costing about £3 because I hardly use it.

This thread is nearly 5 years old.

My SIM was ordered from Lebara. My contract is £5 a month renewable monthly so you can cancel at any time.
I have unlimited calls to U.K. landlines and U.K. mobiles and 100 International minutes per month. I also have 3 gigabytes of data but that was a special deal. I believe it is now 2 gigabytes on their £5 contract. That package is more than enough for almost everyone.

Just read your post Alegrias1. Silly me. I wish Gransnet would notify it is a zombie thread as they do on Mumsnet.

Anyway someone might benefit from recent information if they are interested in the subject.

Duh didn't notice silly me

The thread has been resurrected by an unfamiliar poster who has provided a link to download something to our phones. I feel a little wary. Apologies if I’ve got it wrong.

Yes, I omitted to say I reported it before I posted

The cheapest tariff available now from Smarty is £6 the max refund for not using your 1GB allowance is £1. You would be better off with Lebara. Elless
