Not that anyone on here would be scammed but this is clever.
You will receive a phone call with a local code showing. They will introduce themselves and then ask * can you hear me* this is the crucial part because you will automatically answer, yes.
They will then go into a shpiel about what they are selling. They will then edit the call with you saying yes you do want to buy their product.
They will then go after you for the money. It appears that the contract is legal even though it was conducted over the phone.

But what's the product? And how can you pay for it if you haven't received it?

What I meant was, how can you be expected to pay for it if you haven't received it? I'm pretty sure that phone call wouldn't stand up as a binding contract in a court of law..

This seems to be all over the papers, but (being incredibly fick here) how can you be scammed into buying over the phone unless you divulge your address and card/bank details?

It seems lots of people have been scammed in the US. Maybe our consumer laws would protect us.Since I sometimes manage to cover the microphone on my mobile and have some friends who are hard of hearing I often ask them this. Hope I don't scare anyone!

Snopes has looked at the US evidence and classified it as 'Unproven'
