The UK entry for Song for Europe - is it just me?

I heard the UK entry for the first time yesterday, 'Never Give Up on You' by Lucie Jones.

Is it just me, or in the light of Brexit do you think the lyrics could be miss(?)-interpreted by the rest of Europe?

It starts:

Tell me your secrets, I’lll keep them safe
No sign of weakness, it’s a sign of faith
We’ll stand tall so you don’t fall

You’re not defeated, you’re in repair
Don’t have to call me, I’ll always be there
We’ll stand tall, so you don’t fall

I know we never get many votes, and because of Brexit are not likely to get any votes anyway, but I don't think this song will help!!!

Not immortal lyrics either hmm

I saw the programme when the song was chosen. Not in the least bit memorable and the lyrics don't make a lot of sense to me. I predict zero points.

Maybe "Time to say Goodbye" might have been more suitable? grin

Mind you the lyrics are up on Boom Bang a bang( and we could have had congratulations and jubilations for leaving the EU) grin but frankly I don't know why we continue to bother with it, the whole thing is a badly sung farce.

I don't know why UK continues to enter this "competition". The votes are all partisan, does anyone actually believe the best song wins. I can't say any of the songs who have entered for UK over the last few years have been memorable and they didn't deserve to win, having said that I haven't actually watched the programme for years!

The show has nothing to do with talent or song writing, does anyone even watch it ?

I liked the Lordi one, sunseeker. And the bearded lady. We never put forward anything good. If we won, we would have to host the next one

Aren't we only in it automatically because we help fund it? I'd rather we competed in the preliminary rounds and if knocked out so be it. Could spend the money on something better. I think it has had its day.

Maggiemaybe Sun 09-Apr-17 17:26:26

"You Don't Get Me, I'm Still Part of the Union"?
"With or Without EU"?
"Do You Believe in Life After Leave""?

sunseeker - I'm with you, haven't watched it for years, but why do we bother entering at all. Most of the other participant countries, with a few exceptions, but in particular the eastern bloc ones that vote for each other, don't have any artists that are known internationally. Most winners sink without a trace and apart from giving the world ABBA a few decades ago the Eurovision Song Contest really is a waste of time and money and as you say roses a farce. England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland have produced groups, singers, songwriters galore, we don't really have anything to prove. Maybe our choice of song should be "I will survive" grin

It's nothing to do with music!!

No idea why we enter this - we will never get anywhere, it's embarrassing and a waste of money! Yes probably null points now - maybe one of the better things to come from Brexit that we can bow out!

Jalima1108 Sun 09-Apr-17 20:29:00

Australia was in it last year I think!

Someone didn't get 'O' level Geography grin

Thing is, the option to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest is, funnily enough, not based on the map of Europe, or even the EU, it is based on the EBU (European Broadcasting Union)
This article helps to understand how it works, to a degree.

As for the quality of the songs/musicians. the whole thing is a farce. All the countries tend to present obscure or minor groups/singers. I imagine the greats would not participate anyway. No money in it for them, I reckon. It has become such a joke, I imagine they wouldnt want to participate in it even if there was money to be earned. I havent watched it for yonks - maybe 20/30 years!
