'Stuff'

Do you find that homes today are full of 'stuff'? Games, clothes, wires, shoes, etc?
I'm at my daughters, moving 'stuff' which doesn't seem to have a designated area to live in.... it drives me mad!!
My friends grandchildren have to eat their meals sitting on a blanket on the floor, because the dining table is covered with 'stuff'.

My dining table is covered with 'stuff' too ! Goodness knows where it all comes from - things needing put away , a child's toy in bits waiting to be mended , a semi assembled Ikea storage box , boxes of tissues because I've got the flu' , lots and lots 'stuff' . I'll clear it at the weekend ! I might have a winter picnic tea on the blanket tonight , too ! Sounds good to me .

I have a "stuff" corner in the kitchen on the L-shaped work top.
Originally I just put things there that needed to be taken upstairs or put away somewhere.
Now the pile has grown.
Just made a list....pair of GS's school socks (washed!), electric toothbrush awaiting repair, lists of jobs to do for DH,packet of biscuits, coloured pencils for homework, dishwash tablets for DS,DH's wallet....oh I could go on and bore you, so I won't.
Just stuff!
Too much of it in our homes.

I'm the opposite. My mother's house had "stuff" everywhere, it drove me to distraction. I gave up on tidying it in the end.
My dining table is clutter free and no-one dares put anything on it. grin

The top of the microwave is a 'stuff' magnet in my flat. If I dont keep on top of it, it can multiply at an alarming rate.

I have an 'L' shaped bit of worktop in the kitchen too grannsue where 'stuff' seems to accumulate.

Perhaps I should make more effort because it is just by the entrance to the kitchen blush
But such a handy place for specs, table mats, a box of tissues, fruit bowl which always seems to have receipts tucked underneath, post etc etc.

I'm quite 'stuff adverse but my eldest daughter has 'stuff' everywhere. She has a beautifully large kitchen/diner with an island and dining table but so much 'stuff'.
With three daughters there are always letters from school, drawings, half built Lego etc but it all gets put down and left. She does occasionally clear it all and it looks great until it all piles up again !!

My DD’s house is always stuff laden - I have not seen the surface of their dining table since last Christmas, when they started building a very large Lego set which is still a work in progress. Add to that all the “waiting for action” paperwork and GS’s school stuff, and you get the idea. I know she is not on her own - my best friend’s DD is absolutely the same by the sound of it. Perhaps it is what comes of having busy lives. Before GS was born they were the tidiest people on the planet! I occasionally have “stuff creep” on the kitchen worktops, but don’t let it get out of control or I have my collar felt by Himself!

I do not have stuff it would dry me witless. I'm an 'if in doubt chuck it out' kind of person. Everything in this house has a place and its all in its place. Tidy freak!!

I have plenty of storage so apart from paperwork, which accumulates in my bedroom, I have very little 'stuff' on show. (It lurks behind closed doors!)

Nanabilly Fri 20-Oct-17 10:05:40

I hate stuff everywhere .all mine goes in the spare bedroom and I sort it out every so often

trisher Fri 20-Oct-17 10:11:43

My house is full of 'stuff', history stuff, painting stuff, library stuff, stuff to be finished, stuff to be started. I say it shows a busy life. My DIL on the other hand who is even busier manages to sort out everything. Toys, books, clothes are all sorted and packed away as the children get too old/big for them. I've still got books that belonged to my sons-now in their 30s!

This is my dining table!! Everything I use day to day is to hand. I do move away the laptop to eat my meals. When visitors come I pile it all into the laundry basket and hide it in the cupboard under the stairs, which is also chock -a -block, and add extra table leaves. There are usually about 10 post-it notes with reminders in date order lined up around the table edge, they are down to 3 today, which is good. Diary also open to the month too. I am a belt and braces kind of gal!blush Needless to say I live alone!

No stuff for me either, a home for everything. I have books, photos etc but all in a designated space. My husband occasionally tried to house stuff on the dining table but it's rapidly removed

KatyK Fri 20-Oct-17 10:50:26

My DH seems to have an obsession with collecting wires confused

loopyloo Fri 20-Oct-17 10:59:01

Yes it's a problem for me.
Stuff everywhere.
Have lots of interests and hate waste so too much is kept.
Don't know where to start.
And yes I have Marie Kondo and other books on hoarding.
I think too that it's something we need to teach children.
How to cope with materialism.
Will make a start today.

petra Fri 20-Oct-17 11:17:58

I can't bear 'stuff' anywhere: not even in drawers or cupboards.

sweetheartnana Fri 20-Oct-17 11:25:00

So pleased it’s not just me who collects stuff. I have a ‘stuff’ drawer where anything that needs mending, filing, or just doesn’t yet have a home, goes. Every so often (usually when the drawer is so full it won’t close!) I have a good clear out. If feels so satisfying afterwards when the drawer is nice and clear. Doesn’t take like by to refill it though

annodomini Fri 20-Oct-17 11:58:35

I don't collect 'stuff' - it just follows me around! When I downsized, 17 years ago, I thought I could be 'minimalist'. hmm

loopyloo Fri 20-Oct-17 12:54:20

I suppose it's called husbandry. Also a question of being in control of one's life.
DDS place is dreadful. She works nearly full time and the children's rooms are full of stuff. They really need rooms twice the size and another room as a library to keep all the books. No chance of that. I try to tidy up a bit but in someone else's place it's difficult. Must look up and what Norland Nannies are trained to do.
Well, I am off to the shed to make a start on my stuff.

BBbevan Fri 20-Oct-17 13:11:23

No stuff for me. Just a 'bits' drawer in the kitchen, with bits of string, elasticbands etc. DGDs loved to rummage in this when they were smaller.

Barmyoldbat Fri 20-Oct-17 18:20:10

Our table has two piles of stuff to do, nearly all paperwork. By putting it on the table it gets done as for instances tomorrow we have friends coming around to eat and we will need a table, also the house will also get a good clean!

varian Fri 20-Oct-17 19:58:39

It is a good idea to invite friends round for a meal or, even better, to stay for afew days. It forces you to tidy up and do a bit of cleaning.

Willow500 Fri 20-Oct-17 20:19:27

My dining table attracts stuff but I clear it away on a regular basis as it drives me mad. The table at the side of OH's chair is full of his stuff however - several pairs of glasses, two phones, his iPad, paperwork, a mouse and mousemat (he keeps his laptop at the side on the floor alongside a basket full of wires!). My desk in my office currently looks a mess with receipts waiting to be filed, two shoes, the cats injection certificates, a parcel waiting to be returned, a box of batteries and my glass of wine (OK that will be gone shortly grin ). Good job it's the weekend so I can tidy up!!

Willow500 Fri 20-Oct-17 20:20:34

Shoes?!! That would be so unlucky grin - it should be phones!
