Female screen icons

Just spent time with DD2 and SIL. DH is a talented artist so they've asked him to draw three screen icons for the wall of their new home cinema (yes I know-it's in the cellar!). James Bond was an easy choice, Edward Fox in Day of the Jackal, Jason Bourne, Harrison Ford but what about a female star?
Marilyn Monroe is obvious but they would really like someone of their generation-they're in their forties. well folks, any suggestions?

Audrey Hepburn . Bardot and Loren

Perhaps too sixties ?

Well if it's female stars of the current time they're after, what about Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Kate Winslett, Natalie Portman, Angelina Jolie?
Thing is, are they 'icons'? I'm not sure, maybe not in the same way as Audrey Hepburn, Bridgitte Bardot and Sophia Loren.

For me, as a generational thing, it has to be Katherine Hepburn, hands down, but for the modern generation, Meryl Streep certainly, Cate Blanchett, perhaps Susan Sarandon.

This

I don't think modern actresses are icons, if you saw them in a piece of art you would struggle to recognise them.

Eglantine21 Sun 21-Jan-18 10:11:50

That's because they all look the same grin

NannyTee Sun 21-Jan-18 10:15:24

Julia Roberts? Cameron Diaz or Gwyneth Paltrow ?

Rosieroe Sun 21-Jan-18 10:27:20

Diana Rigg is same era as Edward Fox and Sean Connery (assuming that’s who you mean as James Bond). Contemporary British actress - Helen Mirren, Joanna Lumley?

Bardot? With her convictions for inciting racial hatred? Might as well have Kevin Spacey.

Doris Day. In my opinion she had it all, although seen as less glamorous than some.

BlueBelle Sun 21-Jan-18 10:34:27

But some of these suggestions aren’t really current are they
It’s hard to think of any since Meryl Streep and Julie Roberts what about Kate Winslet

NannyTee Sun 21-Jan-18 10:37:42

Michelle Pfeiffer. ?

MissAdventure Sun 21-Jan-18 10:38:43

Diana Dors?

MissAdventure Sun 21-Jan-18 10:41:16

Oh! What about Uma Thurman?

annodomini Sun 21-Jan-18 10:42:37

Anne Hathaway

MissAdventure Sun 21-Jan-18 10:42:56

Jamie Lee Curtis?

MissAdventure Sun 21-Jan-18 10:43:30

Whoever the woman was from the Alien films?

lemongrove Sun 21-Jan-18 10:49:28

Sigourney Weaver MissA

Not their era though, still.

I struggle to think of any who are ‘icons’ which is sad really,
Need a ponder.

MissAdventure Sun 21-Jan-18 10:51:33

Thank you. That's the one. smile

henetha Sun 21-Jan-18 10:56:55

Judy Garland, for us really-oldies. And Ingrid Bergman.
And Katherine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford...I'm on a roll now!

Grannyknot Sun 21-Jan-18 11:02:40

As they're in their 40s ... Carrie Fisher.

Eglantine21 Sun 21-Jan-18 11:09:29

Looking at the male list its iconic roles really, rather that the star themselves.

I'd have to go for Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia.

Anniebach Sun 21-Jan-18 11:15:17

Female actors now do not have the stardust of the likes of Audrey Hepburn and Katherine Hepburn, with the exception of Meryl Streep
