Seen on facebook,
Do you know why Kellogs Cornflakes were " invented"?
Google unless you are shocked easily or in fact love cornflakes
.

Bathsheba Tue 20-Aug-19 13:44:18

Haha, yes I saw that on FB quite a while ago annsixty. And I'm not going to mention it here - I'll let people Google it and be shocked ?

Sara65 Tue 20-Aug-19 13:51:13

Please tell

tanith Tue 20-Aug-19 14:24:02

???

KatyK Tue 20-Aug-19 14:42:19

I've read this but not on Facebook. I'm not on it.

yggdrasil Tue 20-Aug-19 15:28:46

I am surprised that it took FB to reveal that :-) It has been very well known for decades

Sara65 Tue 20-Aug-19 15:55:13

Not by me

BlueBelle Tue 20-Aug-19 16:01:13

It was said to halt excessive sexual activity and masturbation Sara not sure if that’s eating them or putting them in your pants ?????

MissAdventure Tue 20-Aug-19 16:38:48

I expect they're ideal for cereal cheats..

Nortsat46 Tue 20-Aug-19 16:45:36

Anthony Hopkins played John Kellogg, in the film The Road to Wellville.
I don't think the Kellogg's branding quite captures that element of cornflakes development or history... unless there is something symbolic in the Kellogg's cockerel ?

Sara65 Tue 20-Aug-19 17:51:11

Thanks Bluebelle

Thats the strangest theory I’ve heard in years! Is there any evidence that it worked?

GrannyLiv Tue 20-Aug-19 18:19:52

Jeez - I've just had a quick Google and that Kellog bloke was warped.

GabriellaG54 Tue 20-Aug-19 22:57:41

W. K. Kellogg invented cornflakes to sprinkle on the floor outside the bedrooms of houseguests, as he deplored depravity and dissolute behaviour. ?

Tangerine Tue 20-Aug-19 22:59:54

Miss Adventure - I laughed at your remark about cereal cheats. Very witty.

GabriellaG54 Tue 20-Aug-19 23:00:35

BTW...I have only read the first 4 posts on GN and not yet read the facebook page as I'm not on FB.
What is the answer?

BlueBelle Tue 20-Aug-19 23:24:54

Read the seventh post them Gabriella

One of the Kellogs was also responsible for first promoting breakfast as the most important meal of the day. Of course it was purely coincidental that a particular breakfast cereal had a central role in his finances.

The thing about being in a Trivia team for decades, is that you pick up all sorts of useless, although often interesting information.

Invented from an accidentally overcooked pot of corn at the Battle Creek Sanitarium, cornflakes conformed to the strict dietary principles of the Seventh Day Adventist inventors.
A bland diet for recovering soldiers was deemed essential 'to cool the passions'. Some hopes!

Digestive biscuits (US Graham crackers) were for the same purpose as cornflakes.

The Victorians had an obsession with sex, which in itself was counter-productive.
.
Trainers were inspired by waffles.
The ancient Egyptians thought lettuce an aphrodisiac (ask a rabbit) smile

It was illegal to colour margarine yellow in Wisconsin until 1967 - up to that date it was an unappetising white fat there. For a short time in the early 20th century, some States coloured it pink.

Vaseline, petroleum jelly, was eaten every day by its inventor; he died at 96.

As for eye makeup and tampons...probably the least said, the better.

I'm horrified and glad I've never understood how to use FBook!
And I'm NEVER buying Cornflakes again after reading this. Not that there's any passion to be subdued in our house, unless it's related to Match of the Day!
