Isn’t it a bit early

Don’t usually bother with magazines but as we are going away next week thought I would get one. Lost it completely and changed my mind when I saw magazines telling me how I would have a stress free Christmas if I started now and what gifts I needed to get to please everyone. For heavens sake it’s the middle of September, and as it’s a religious festival (well I still like to think it is) I feel it’s all gone totally mad.

Mid September is late! I was receiving lists of cards and diaries for next year to buy early July. Early December would suit me and not put me off everything.

I've almost finished my Christmas shopping ,I have a lot to buy for so I like to get it done an dwrapped by November 1st .New baby arrived last week so her s was ordered yesterday

Two weeks ago I tried to get good seats for the Christmas panto at our local theatre. All the seats we usually get were sold out for all performances from November to January! I did manage to find six seats together for the back stalls but only with the telephone help of the nice man in the box office. The website said none left! What a palaver and so soon.

I get irritated with people who start Christmas shopping this early. It drags on and on. I must now eat my words as I have today ordered a book (a new biography of Richard Briers) for DH for Christmas.

Jane10 Sat 14-Sep-19 14:23:42

I just bought a book for SiL's Christmas present but it's so long to go that I'm just going to give it to him tomorrow.
You can shop just toooooo early!

paddyann Sat 14-Sep-19 14:35:59

KatyK why does something that doesn't affect you irritate you? Actually the more of us who get christmas sorted early means you wont have to fight through crowds to get yours.

KatyK Sat 14-Sep-19 14:43:23

paddyann I don't know really. Probably because I'm a miserable sod.

I've always started early. DD birthday is end of October and as soon as that was over I'd start buying stocking fillers to spread the cost. I'm the same with non perishable food stuff too.
I only have 4 adults and two GC to buy for now so I don't need to start early, plus most if not all will be ordered on line.

M0nica Sat 14-Sep-19 15:26:25

I bought my first stocking present in last January's sales. I picked up more on holiday and a couple in a Charity shop, all before the end of August.

I am already liaising with DDiL about the pantomime because, as Jane10 says, the best seats go quickly.

Serious Christmas planning will not start until mod-October when the email and booklet from the poultry farm arrives. Then one evening, when DH is at rehearsal, I will put some Christmas music on, sit down in the study and get up the Christmas spread sheet.

KatyK another miserable sod here.

Tesco plastic tubs of Roses Qal St and Celebrations are £3.50 but 1/2 the size of the originals.
Let's face it, many of us only bought those tins at C to be handed round when watching tv or playing board games so the sweet companies doing us out of half a tin in the mistaken belief that they're saving us from unhealthy sweetmeats, are wrong...IMV.
A week of indulgence isn't too much to expect and they were cheap enough for most people to afford.
Of course, ingredients change, tastes change, we're older.
I prefer a Hotel Chocolat monthly selection as a treat.
Green and Blacks have 90g (used to be 100g) bars for £1.50 ATM. I like the Raspberry and Hazelnut or a square of plain dark choc occasionally.
My C shopping is done much nearer the time when shops start to reduce their goods and I too wrap in brown paper tied with raffia and decorated with sprigs of holly and a black & white photo of the recipient with a greeting written on the reverse.
They look very smart, if I say so myself. ?

GabriellaG54 Sat 14-Sep-19 15:46:43

Yummy ? later, maybe ??

EllanVannin Sat 14-Sep-19 15:52:41

I've not long hurled the contents of a container of QS in the bin--last weeks collection to be precise. You'd have to be desperate to eat those, yuk. Most of my chocs ended up in the bin, even M&S's. I seem to have lost my sweet tooth.
Our most local Thornton's have closed down so if I want extra-special chocs etc it'll have to be online.

Baggs Sat 14-Sep-19 15:59:41

Thornton's chocolate is extra specially revolting.

I just can’t contemplate any thing to do with Christmas this early. I really love Christmas but there’s no space in my muddled brain until December. I know it might be less stressful if I could but I can’t.
It’s a gorgeous sunny day here so I’m still in summer mode. Sitting in my south facing garden sunshine reading a book, listening to Moria on classic F.M oh I’m off to make myself a Pimms.

Sara65 Sat 14-Sep-19 16:44:01

I don’t like thinking about it yet, but as Jane said, things start to sell out. I’m trying to get everyone coordinated for the Festival of Light at a local stately home, and for a light show in a NT property, if I can’t my husband and I will be only too happy to go on our own, and save a fortune

Witzend Sat 14-Sep-19 16:45:38

Lots of people like to spread the cost, and not have to cram all their shopping into a short period, especially if they have lots of people to buy for.

I don't understand anyone getting irritated. Just ignore if you're not interested.
I don't usually start shopping or thinking about it until after Bonfire Night, though having said that I did buy some C. Cards from an RNLI shop in August, and the other week ordered a dinosaur book for Gds.
But mince pies and CDs of carols will alway wait until 1st December.

Namsnanny Sat 14-Sep-19 17:11:47

I started a thread about a week or two ago say the same thing about c———-s mags..

So yes can I join the miserable sods club too Katyk?

KatyK Sat 14-Sep-19 17:13:48

Yes you can Namsnanny smile

KatyK Sat 14-Sep-19 17:15:34

Saying that, I may have to revoke my membership of the club as I have just realised that I bought some reduced charity Christmas cards in January blush

Two grandchildren staying one night last week, came in from school to find the Smyths toy catalogue on the mat, didn’t hear a peep out of the youngest all evening, apart from occasionally showing me toys he simply had to have. Like he needs another load of awful plastic rubbish.

I was amazed to receive the Cotton Traders Spring/Summer 2020 preview catalogue last week. I don't want to be thinking about Christmas yet, let alone next summer!
