2 weeks or 3 months?

We're just doing our normal shops. Stockpiling is disgraceful. DH went to Morrisons to buy some bread and milk. He arrived at 7am as they opened and didn't leave until after 9am because the queues were so long for the tills. He said people had trolleys loaded up so much they were having to balance things.

My son was shopping and saw a husband in one queue and the wife in the next door checkout queue both had trolleys stocked as high as possible. Why is this still going on?
Where are peoples guilty feelings and just common sense that if we all help each other we will get through this easier.
Its a disgrace, they need putting down.

Likewise, we are doing little shops if and when we have to. How can people bulk-buy vegetables, fruit etc? (which is what I've seen as well) - they will probably be throwing them away by the ton in a week or so. Hubby went to Sainsbury's earlier this week, bought a packet of ham, some cheese and milk and then went to local small market where there is a veg stall and got a few satsumas, apples and carrots. That was it. We are managing, and I realise that others have families to feed, but this panic buying and just plain greed is really getting me down.

Not condoning panic buying etc, but with respect, are you shopping just for yourself? If so, it must be easier than if you are trying to buy enough for a larger family.

Yes indeed, just for myself.

But when people strip shelves, there is little chance of anything reasonable being left for singletons or those who have been allocated a designated time, besides, larger families have been sending individual members to shop as if on their own.

I'm not complaing about a lack of supplies for myself but think it's downright stupidity and selfish behaviour for others who are frail, cannot stand for hours in a queue and are part of the NHS and emergency crews.

My DD got off a plane from Australia today and was told on the plane to isolate for7 days. So it is all very confusing. We have to isolate for 3 months.

It could stop if the supermarkets put a £50 max shop per person. Yes, I know some would go twice but it would spread the load in the current climate.

Aren't some people being sent some sort of notification of their categorised illnesses and how far up or down their illness allows or disallows the length of time they remain cooped up ?

I understand completely what you are saying, I just meant that if buying for one, you don’t have to get three containers of milk say, whereas if you are a family of five, you need more.
We are going through an awful time, and it is not bringing out the best in many people.

It's not just the supermarkets that are being raided. The general public are now raiding Smithfields market and grabbing the meat before the wholesalers can get it out to the public.

Seems like the army will have to be brought in to restore a bit of order, if things don’t improve.

Is it just me, or can someone explain the logic of supermarkets closing the self check-outs and smart-shop checkouts? Surely this just makes the queues build up and means more people in close quarters for longer? If it is being done to regulate the amount people are buying, why can't they just have supervisors on the self-check outs etc. as well as on the regular tills? By the way, I worked for a supermarket for several years when my girls were young and I feel very sorry for the staff being expected to deal with panic buyers. More burly security staff would be an idea to challenge anyone "hoarding". The selfish few are inevitably social bullies and, like most bullies, would back down if challenged by someone bigger and stronger than them! Just a thought.........

I buy 3-4 X 1 ltr Cornish Gold milk and enough bread (or packet bread mix in a onece weekly shop, which is what I usually do to last at least 7 days, plus a normal amount of other stuff, only if I need it. I have a small freezer section of the fridge which has 4 Activia yogurts and 2 pks butter as I don't like frozen food.
You don't honestly think that those huge queues pictured outside Tesco and other stores, are people shopping for the whole week...do you? They probably have other family members in the same queue, each with a list so they make sure they get everything.
10-1 they do that multiple times during the week.
You only have to look at the goods in their trollies to know that isn't a normal weekly shop, even for a family of 6.

Could it be that they are trying to prevent theft, after all, you are in your honour to scan every item but in these circumstances, will everyone do just that?

Surely before long some of the shoppers will have to cut down as they must run out of money! They must be buying months worth instead of weeks worth.

GPs are writing to everyone on their list who is classed as high-risk and telling them not to go out (off their premises) for any reason whatsoever for 3 months.
Not shopping, not prescriptions, nothing. They are to ask relatives, friends and if they have no-one who can help, they will have food boxes (or similar) delivered by the army.

I do hope I won't be put into the stockpiling category when I go shopping this week. I usually do a monthly shop on pay week which, falls this week, so I will be running very low on quite a few items for me and the dogs. I've only bought one or two fresh bits over the last couple of weeks. Now I'm also shopping for my 85 year old mother and 87 year old neighbour. Then, to top it off, my daughter will need a few fresh bits for herself and the grandchildren. I'm sure my trolley won't particularly look good but, it's all quite genuine and I want to get it done in one go so I don't have to go back.

Well, that's me for the night.
Just had 3 Weetabix with milk after a shower and now in pjs in bed with window open and I will watch some Last Tango episodes I haven't seen and then some true murders on YouTube if I can stay awake.

We have an online delivery every week and I am sure any new delivery drivers think we must be stockpiling as I am buying for 5 adults and 2 children.

If you are told to stay in for 12 weeks - you won’t want to shop weekly. Best to get some stock in, surely? Not defending profiteering and the like but we always have enough in for a couple of weeks. I’m not going near a supermarket for the foreseeable.

And still people don't understand!
