I watched it as, to my eternal regret, I never found out the story of my Dad's rescue from the beaches of Dunkirk. He would never discuss the war. He was one if Monty's Desert Rats and at one time was missing presumed killed. If 'real time' film is shown of soldiers disembarking, I still look to see if I can recognise him!
We saw it in the cinema and I was frankly underwhelmed. An uncle of mine was evacuated from Dunkirk while wounded, so I did have that at the forefront of my mind, too.
For me the Dunkirk scenes in Atonement were considerably more affecting/moving, though they were a relatively small part of it. For war films of that era I personally rate Darkest Hour among the best. The portrayal of Churchill was outstanding and thoroughly deserving of the Oscar.
DH and I went to see this at the cinema when it first came out. The cinematography is amazing and probably better appreciated on the big screen. We both enjoyed it
Anyone watch Dunkirk last night? This is my first thread attempt so please be kind. It was a fantastic portrayal of the horror of World War 2 without glorifying the war. So much suffering for all the forces at that fearful, terrible period of what our forces had to go through. My father fought in the RAF then but never spoke about his part in it. I would say this is the best WW2 film I have ever seen.
