Please settle a disagreement ? three in my family insist it’s Hermies, while I think it’s actually pronounced how it’s spelt! I could always ask the driver I suppose! It’s like Matalan a couple in my extended family insist it’s mataland ??

It’s HQ is in Germany. I pronounce it horrible amongst other things, some not printable.

Funny isn’t it how things are said? I got laughed at when at school reading aloud and said ‘peeny-lope’ for Penelope.
And passing the cinema on the bus when I said ‘gross-venor’ for Grove-nor (Grosvenor).

So many to trip up with!

Ermez - French pronunciation.

Ermez - French pronunciation.

Indeed but I’d sound daft saying here !

Herr Meez for the delivery company and the Greek god.

Err Mehz for the French fashion house.

If I was in France OK …
But living in Yorkshire I’d feel pretentious saying anything other hur meez

Surely it depends upon which company you are talking about. The fashion house has been around a lot longer than the delivery company having been founded in 1837. And it is known in countries other than France. Anyone remember those dreadful headscarves with the horsey motives?

Anyone remember those dreadful headscarves with the horsey motives? that's why they are the Queen's favourite scarves!

Most people know how to pronounce Penelope, yet Irene is frequently mispronounced as Ireen.

Mamie Sat 27-Nov-21 19:11:41

I would pronounce the delivery company Hermeez because they are the herald of your parcel (maybe) arriving.
The French pronounce the name of the (Welsh) wife of the ex politician Fillon as Pennylope. (2 syllables). ?

Mamie Sat 27-Nov-21 19:13:33

And Hermes the ancient greek herald has been around a lot longer than the French company!

Grandma70s Sat 27-Nov-21 19:19:40

I make Pennylope into three syllables, Mamie. Which one do I miss out? Penny-lope.

AmberSpyglass Sat 27-Nov-21 19:24:28

Hermes the courier - her-mees

Hermes the designer - er-mez

Marydoll Sat 27-Nov-21 19:25:04

It's 4 syllables

Pen/el/o/pe

Or, if you want it more 'phonetically', Pen/ell/oe/pee

Eek! dreadful scarves with horsey motifs ?
I have one beautiful vintage Hermès scarf which I absolutely treasure.
Nothing wrong with HM’s good taste tcrgrin

Elegran Sat 27-Nov-21 19:40:46

Penn-ELL-oh-pee Pronounced like that because it was ancient Greek (Odysseus' wife, who waited 10 years for him while he fought in the Trojan War, then another ten years for him to eventually get back to her. Meanwhile, to delay them, she told the many blokes fighting to get her to "ditch Odysseus and marry me" (thus gaining control of her property as well as her) that first she had to finish weaving a shroud for her father-in-law. By day she wove, by night she undid the day's work.
There is a business selling embroidery materials called Penelope - could be a reference to all the unpicking that goes on when we make mistakes.

Ha ha - the last DC was going to be Penelope but the others said they'd call her Penelope Pitstop! ?
6 syllables.
DH said he would have called her Pennylope.

We settled for a name with 3 syllables in the end. She shortens it to one.

Elegran Sat 27-Nov-21 19:42:33

Crossed posts, Maizie.
It is surprising how many firms choose names from away back in the past.

Yes, I know, but Mamie had said that the French pronounced it ‘Penny-lope (2 syllables)’.. I don’t get that.

Irene should be pronounced Ireeny (3 syllables). not Ireen.

I like them too MawBeMaw. Very discerning taste. Yours looks lovely. They are so soft.
I'm just off to caress mine, if I can find it.

Grandma70s one of my names is Irene which has always been pronounced in my family as Ireen. There are no correct ways for given birth names. Evelyn is pronounce Eve Lyn in Hertfordshire but Evy Lyn in Somerset. My grandmother pronounced her name as Claire a, but others pronounce it Clarah.
