Outrageous price hike

I buy Tesco nappy bags to use as poo bags for my dog, for a long time they have been 67p and would expect maybe a 10% rise but they have gone up to £1 which is a nearly 50% rise. I really don’t understand this at all as I thought the cost of living rise would be about 10%. Please feel free to enlighten me… it seems to me the supermarkets now have carte blanche to do exactly what they want with prices

We tend to rotate our shopping for the most part, and I do it online.

So every other week is generally the same shop except for a few monthly bits like washing powder or toiletries.

So I have really noticed the extra expense.

Because I get a bit anxious when it gets to a certain amount I'm just making my life harder by forgetting things too

Had a bit of a fit just now - nipped out to buy toddler milk powder for Gdd2- Cow and Gate was £9.65 - Aptamil equivalent was £13.25!! I’ve always bought C&G - good old UK brand, but I’m sure the difference in price was never anything like that!

Before anyone says anything, she’d normally have a breastfeed at bedtime, but dd is away for work yet again, so SiL is doing the honours with a bottle.

Many supermarkets have reintroduced the pass scheme, I've just signed up for Tesco as they sell my dog's favourite food.

£4.99 per month off peak, and this covers the delivery charge for four weeks. When I looked at the slots this week they were £4.50, so a great saving on a weekly delivery. I'm hoping to reduce my food bill, average spend including expensive dog food is £60, I need to cut back.

They are putting security tags on a kilo of Lurpak - it is £9!

I saw that. Just hope I bought some on my last online shopping order before I came away, otherwise I'll be doing without until the price comes back down - one way to cure me from eating it and help my diet as well!

I couldn't believe the price of butter yesterday in Morrisons a small tub of Anchor was £2.50 the big one was £4.49 just a few weeks ago the big one was £2.50. Lurpak was £4.75 for the big size! what on earth is going on? Surely milk isn't in short supply or is it the cost of processing that has sky rocketed?

I’ve switched to Aldi, their British butter was £1.75 this week, and their large size Lurpak equivalent was £2.15 I think, quite a bit less than the other supermarkets. I don’t like food shopping, so I’ve never bothered to check prices closely until the last few weeks, but the differences between shops for equivalent items are getting so marked now that it’s really worth shopping around although I find it a pain, you can definitely save lots by doing it.

It’ll be the cost of animal feed for the cattle, the processing costs, the rise in fuel for transportation and so on.

Of course there is that but you have to factor in supermarket greed and profiteering, they know they have us over a barrel. I do believe if the prices get any more ridiculous people will just stop buying those really expensive brands..can’t/won’t..

Aren’t you lucky? The only supermarket I can reach is Waitrose, where I usually buy nappy bags for poo bags at £1. Yesterday they only had branded poo bags at £2.99.
Meat for my cats has gone from £2.80 to £4.10 for 500 g

Ah confusingly Shinamae, the branding on these tie-handle freezer poly bags has changed and I have some that are ‘Alio’ like my photo - and that has been replaced with Aldi’s branding ‘Magnum’ for the same product.

?? ????

I don’t drive and my nearest supermarket is a five minute walk away which is a Tesco.l have really noticed how so many prices have gone up such a lot,so much more than I anticipated. If it has been 10% it would’ve been bad enough but as I said before the supermarkets now are doing exactly what they want with the prices, I know they have to go up but I do think this is out of all proportion but what choice do we have?

A lot of things gone up by 50p I've noticed.
I usually do an Iceland order every now and then. I went on their website a couple of nights ago and couldn't believe how much things had gone up. Utterly Butterly gone up 60p, I can buy that from B&M for £1.10 Iceland selling frozen cream doughnuts £2.00 Tesco and B&M £1.00. I could go on...
Needless to say I didn't bother.

Remember that shopping at Iceland on Tuesdays is giving 10% discount on any purchases no minimum spend for over 60 years of age.The staff said it would last until October as far as they knew.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know about that. smile

I’ll look out for those Jane43 . Good value.

Hardly a basic, I know, but the luscious fat black English cherries were in M&S today - a fiver for 650 gm - last year it was 750gm.

I’m making a pig of myself on them anyway - the season is very short and I do largely stick to UK grown fruit and veg in season.

Shinamae Thu 07-Jul-22 17:24:44

Ok,thanks Tilly….

TillyTrotter Thu 07-Jul-22 14:33:40

Yes,
they have tie handles so I use them for spent cat litter Shinamae. They are quite thin, but not too thin IYKWIM.

I buy Aldi own brand “Magnum” (2 sizes available) for soiled cat litter. They have risen in price but are £1.09 for 80 bags.
Tie handles.

Tilly are you sure that’s the right picture? ?

Most of the bio-degradable bags are thin and poor, but I have recently found some decent ones on Amazon which you don't put your finger through!!

Looks as though by Christmas we may have a bread crisis too, as the flour mills aren't able to get the decent wheat - the UK doesn't grow it and most UK farmers just grow the stuff for animal feed. A lot of wheat used to come from Ukraine, but that won't be happening for a year or two now; the decent organic spelt this mill uses comes from Germany, it's there, but there are no lorry drivers to bring it!

I thought of you last night Shinamae. I was at the edge of a field in the middle of nowhere, and scrabbled for my poo bag roll - then remembered it was on the kitchen table. Found a big dock leaf, and had to lob it into the dense undergrowth! smile

Oh Shandy…??
