Cold at night, any recommendations?

I heard on the news today that there is no prospect of energy bills coming down in the foreseeable future and I'm getting scared: if I don't have the heating on at night, I can not sleep through; I wake between 2 and 4am. I've tried everything - two or three duvets, hot water bottles, thermal vests, leggings and hats - and nothing works. Is there anyone out there who is as 'nesh' as me and do you have any suggestions? Maybe I just need to emigrate!

(nesh: "weak and delicate, in particular in being susceptible to the cold").

I presume you use a duvet, everyone seems too. You could try flannelette sheets and wool blankets. I went back to them after
many years of duvets and do prefer them. Plus an electric blanket. Poor circulation could make you feel very cold. I also wear warm PJs from QVC by Carole Hochman.

Fleecy pjs teddy duvet cover teddy fitted sheet and pillow cases ( best things I ever bought) electric blanket. Cosy soft bed socks are the best and glass or two of red wine to send me asleep. I am warmer now at night than I ever was and my arthritic joints are grateful.

I bought two sets of the above last year best thing ever I don't need electric blanket at all most stores are selling them now as they are so popular.

Sodapop & ExperiencedNotOld
I use M&S 1 tog duvets, (only M&S do them).
I use 1 duvet in summer but 1 ontop of another in winter. We don't heat our bedroom at night and always have a small top window open. We don't use hot water bottles and have never owned an electric blanket. If it's very cold I occasionally wear bedsocks but usually kick them off after an hour or so. I have a Tempur adjustable bed and some people think that Tempur makes them too hot. It doesn't affect me like that and I need it to adjust my aching bones 😊. Bliss!

I had this problem too. Electric blanket for 10 mins before you get into bed, fleecy pyjamas with hood- game changer- two duvets or a blanket on top of the duvet. I also put film on the windows to stop the cold coming through. I also have fleece socks.

Guess I must be lucky - live at a fairly high, windy area, bedroom has 3 outside walls, cannot sleep with heating in the bedroom. Love to get into a really cold bed, lightweight pjs, summer weight duvet with a sheet. I still end up putting my feet outside the bed as I get too hot! Do feel sorry for those who feel the cold.

I use a keep cup, it’s safer with hot decaf tea . It stays lovely temperature. Just a thought but have u had your thyroid checked. Also other vitamins, your inability to stay warm could be fixed another way. Good luck, being cold is energy sapping.

I bought a Hungarian goose down about 20 years ago, very pricey but worth every penny. I only ever wear knickers in bed, no heating in bedroom. I do have an electric blanket too, and a quilted cotton mattress cover.

Please be careful with electric blankets.
Like you I suffer from the cold. While others are wandering around in t shirts I am there in my thermal vest and jumper.
I used to cover my duvet with other duvets and throws, but I have discovered that a really good duvet alone is enough to keep me warm. I always go to a hot bed that my electric blanket has warmed. I NEVER leave the electric blanket on all night.

I’ve got teddy bear bedding fleecy bottom sheets pillow case and duvet covers and I’ve a electric throw on my sofa I never wake only odd occasions no bed shocks in my bed lol got mine off qvc but dunelm sell them too

NannyMags Fri 10-Feb-23 19:26:50

Electric over blanket is the answer. We put ours on high when we are getting ready for bed and the bed is wonderfully hot when we get in bed. Then we turn it down on med-low over night.

M& S do a heat genie mattress topper . There was a rush in january when Tescos did them for half price. They are Silentnight brand and work well . No cost to run or worry either. Good Luck

A fan of electric blankets here. Colder bedrooms are supposedly better for your health. I only preheat the bed but have been know to put it back on during the night. I am asthmatic and only pure cotton bedclothes for me and frequent washes. When I had to get up to see to a baby I used to have a timer put on a convection heater in the bedroom. Maybe that would be a compromise to keeping a heater on constantly? there are also some very low wattage mini heaters that use 500 w instead of 2 kilowatts a hour.

I bought recently a "Teddy Bear" mattress enhancer from Dunelm. Sits on top of a mattress proctor if you use one and underneath the bottom sheet.
It is so soft, warm and comfortable. Really worth buying.

I find it very hard to believe that people are sleeping in hooded pyjamas, plus 2 duvets, fleece blankets etc. etc. I’m sure you must have a circulatory problem which needs to be addressed.

welbeck Fri 10-Feb-23 22:44:04

my doctor has told me this week that my circulation etc is ok.
the extra clothes are probably because the bedroom rarely reaches 50F this time of year.
one thing i discovered by chance.
i have the sleeping bag so that the zip is on the side i need to get out. it's lightweight, mummie shape.
so the head extension is in front. rather than on pillow.
i sleep on my side, thus the flap becomes a kind of canopy which creates a micro-climate, warms the air i breathe and no cold nose.

Bijou Fri 10-Feb-23 22:50:06

As most Gransnetters know I am 99 years of age.
Electric blanket. I have always had bad circulation and had trouble with my back all my life. When I was in my thirties before electric blankets were on sale to the public my husband managed to get one from the hospital and have one ever since. My bedroom is not heated but I put the slumberland blanket on for a couple of hours before going to bed under a 2.5 tog duvet wearing short nightgown. If it is really cold keep blanket on at lowest setting. Have to get out of bed every couple of hours to use commode.
The blanket on lowest setting costs only the same as a light bulb to run.

Callistemon21 Fri 10-Feb-23 22:54:28

It's so annoying, isn't it, Bijou, having to spend a penny in the night! And I'm younger than you.

But at least you sound as if you stay snug and warm.

Shizam Fri 10-Feb-23 23:07:18

For comfortable and hopefully safe sleeping, I’m all for electric over blanket. John Lewis sell for about £60. It’s warm, has timer, etc. Apparently 8p an hour to use.

Norah Fri 10-Feb-23 23:19:55

welbeck my doctor has told me this week that my circulation etc is ok. the extra clothes are probably because the bedroom rarely reaches 50F this time of year.

Indeed

Our circulation is fine as well, but we've open windows in our bedroom and heat off, probably 12-14 degrees. Warmth matters.

SpringyChicken Fri 10-Feb-23 23:29:24

Our Dreamland electric mattress protector is wonderful. Fast warm up (in minutes) and can be used through the night if required. Cheap to run. Stays in place on the mattress.

Ashcombe Sat 11-Feb-23 07:28:09

Dunelm has a range of items in their sale which are for keeping warm. Last night, I came across the novel idea of a long hot water bottle on their site:-

Electric under blanket, helps me to get to sleep as well. This is the first Winter that I have ever felt the cold so badly. I am tired of wearing layers of clothing, thermals, wrist warmers, leggings and a scarf, that's only indoors! I bought some cashmere wrist warmers in the sale and they have been brilliant!

goose1964 Sat 11-Feb-23 12:30:12

Thick socks, and do you have a blanket or throw you could put on top of the duvet. I have a summer weight duvet that I put on top of my winter weight one, if it's just cool I double it up over my feet.

If my feet are cold so can't sleep.

dogsmother Sat 11-Feb-23 12:49:15

Bijou. You are an inspiration.
Welbeck. You are probably correct a lot do have problems maintaining good circulation, I’m a youngster in my mid 60s however an under active thyroid since my 20s has indeed kept me colder than many.
Daisy. Didn’t you start a great thread!

essjay Sun 12-Feb-23 14:06:19

definitely electric blanket, am finding am putting it on more throughout the night when i wake, never used to be this bad.
