My dgd, aged 4, loved making thumbprint cookies with me but I found them very dry. Are they always like that or did we do something wrong? If anyone knows how to make them well it will be you lovely ladies.

Don't know these biscuits. But in my experience four year olds will be heavy handed if you let them do the cooking....as is good practice if they are to learn. They will enjoy eating them however hard and dry. If you want tastier things, cook when they are at school maybe.

I cooked with my two older grandchildren when they were little. Now they are 12 and 13 they cook delicious food.

You make a simple cookie dough and roll it into small balls before making a small well in each one which you fill with jam before baking. They’re called thumbprint cookies because the child’s supposed to use their thumb to make the well though I find the end of a wooden spoon works better. I like making them with dgd because they give her lots to do. I think you’re right Lullydully but thought it might be possible to improve them.

Like the raspberry buns as made in DR at 11. Yum.

I make thumbprint cookies with my grandchildren.
Here's our recipe for 30 thumbprints.

1 3/4 cups plain flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup butter
3/4 cup castor sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
Strawberry jam

Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add egg and vanilla.
Sift dry ingredients. Add and mix in gently.
Roll into one inch balls then roll in some sugar.
Space apart on lined baking trays. They will spread a little.
Make a thumbprint indentation in the centre and drop in a little jam.
Bake 350 F for 15 minutes. Cool and enjoy.

Thank you Cocopops, I will give your recipe a try. We made some this morning. I added a little extra butter and milk and cooked them at a slightly lower temperature with much better results.
