endamame beans

I bought a bag of these beans today, frozen. I thought they looked like those young peas in pods, you eat the whole lot, pods and all. They're young soy beans.
Then I found something on the internet which said you don't eat the pods.
Has anyone ever used them?

I’ve only ever bought them as beans, not in their pods. Presumably the pods are edible as I’m sure you wouldn’t be allowed to sell them otherwise. Although my girls both think endamame beans are poison beans anyway. grin

I think they are very unpleasant?

We grew them, very successfully. They did look like peas in the pod, so I ate a few raw! I was extremely unwell, but narrowly avoided a trip to A&E with poisoning.

They must be cooked before eating. I found out the hard way!

We pulled them all up, in case the GCs ate any, thinking they were peas.

In Japan we ate small ones whole, as a bar snack, slightly warm (boiled/steamed) with lots of salt. We loved them but I have not been able to replicate them here.

kittyleter that's how we eat them in North Carolina too when they're smallsmile Larger ones are served whole but you strip the beans out of their opened pods with your teeth. I miss not having them.

Googled them and got this
“Are edamame beans good for you?’
“In addition to being a decent source of soy protein, edamame is rich in healthy fiber, antioxidants and vitamin K. These plant compounds may reduce the risk of heart disease and improve the blood lipid profile, a measure of fats including cholesterol and triglycerides”

They are a frequent salad addition where I work. I love them, but only podless. Didn't realise they were so healthy.

I buy the tinned Edamame beans in water and use them cold in a salad. I think lentils and beans in tins are very useful, hot or cold.

They are so, so healthy, they must be Victoria Beckham loves them allegedly.............she eats something in the region of ten or more a day! Someone should tell her "gluttony" is one of the seven deadly sins shock It was clearly spelt out in the Old Testmament thus, "thou should not stuff fistfulls of endamame beans into thine pumped up botoxed mouth, to do so incurs the wrath of God and a plague on your fashion house will follow" and so it came to pass the VB brand lost millions sad

" Endamame beans for a good life, but in moderation".
I've come to that conclusion too. Thankfully I did pod them first after defrosting but it was fiddly and hardly worth the effort.
Then microwaved them for 2 mins.

Birds eye and Waitrose have frozen, podded edamame beans . I add a small handful to frozen peas and cook together.

SalsaQueen Wed 22-Jan-20 20:17:09

I use them in a stir-fry sometimes and quite like them.
