I’ve just made a batch with SRflr I always use plain, will it turn out ok? My head was elsewhere when I went in the cupboard.

Rowantree Sun 09-Aug-20 11:20:11

Yeah!

Puzzler61 Sun 09-Aug-20 11:20:42

I think so*tanith*, it may rise a bit while in the oven, and then
drops back down when cool.
I’ve done it when it’s the only flour in the cupboards.

??. Thanks

It will be fine.

shysal Sun 09-Aug-20 11:30:47

Agree it won't be a problem. Enjoy your crumble.

Puzzler61 Sun 09-Aug-20 11:33:52

To make it crunchy, tip from Mary Berry I have adopted, is to add 2 oz of supermarket brand semolina to an 8oz crumble recipe.

I put Demerara sugar and oats in mine Puzzler61 so crunchy.

It will just be a bit fluffy and still taste delicious.

No problem, i use either.

Please let us know

DanniRae Sun 09-Aug-20 13:15:17

I didn't know you were supposed to use plain flour!

( My crumbles are always fine smile)

SiobhanSharpe Sun 09-Aug-20 13:18:32

I think the esteemed Nigella has said she uses SR flour in crumbles as it makes very little difference.
I use whatever I have to hand.

MiniMoon Sun 09-Aug-20 13:21:04

I use either, everybody enjoys it no matter which flour I use.

The recipe in the Be-ro book (my mother's) is:

4 oz SR flour
2 oz margarine
2 oz sugar

Fruit of your choice.

I opened my sweetie jar that holds my Plain flour and it was full of weevils (urgh, yuk) so had to bin the lot, I used SR flour instead and it was fine, no different than usual.
I use the River Cottage recipe though with oats and ground Almonds in it, so that might make a difference.

Witzend Sun 09-Aug-20 13:41:37

I often have only SR so have used for crumble before - it’ll be fine.
I usually use SR for pastry, too.

I have to use gluten free flour so I use whatever I've got.

Today it's half and half gf flour and buckwheat flour, a tablespoon of ground almonds and porridge oats. I'll scatter demerara sugar over the top before popping it in the oven.

lemongrove Sun 09-Aug-20 14:27:09

I always use SR flour for crumble, with butter and Demerara sugar.

timetogo2016 Sun 09-Aug-20 14:29:45

I also put oats in and Weetabix and use any flour at hand.

TwiceAsNice Sun 09-Aug-20 14:32:03

Have always used SR flour rarely use plain for anything

Puzzler61 Sun 09-Aug-20 14:53:38

Urgh OOps we have a few variations on here that I will try,
But .......
definitely not weevils! ?

I found some once in a bag of flour after a warm spell - they were actually still moving.

Callistemon Sun 09-Aug-20 14:55:54

Oh! Are you supposed to use plain?

GF flour is not always easy to use but it does make good crumbles and biscuits.

DanniRae Sun 09-Aug-20 15:08:52

I keep my flour in the fridge after finding weevils in some a while ago!

ginny Sun 09-Aug-20 16:46:42

Nearly always use SR , not had any complaints
Personally. I like GF flour for crumble.

Oopsadaisy3 Sun 09-Aug-20 17:42:45

Puzzler my weevils were very active, hundreds of the little b*****s.

My sweet jars are too tall to put into the fridge but maybe on top of the boiler in the kitchen isn’t the best place for them!
