What is this latest drink called "bubble tea" that seems to be the latest thing in cafés? I assume it is cold? Has anyone tried it?

It's a sweet tapioca drink of dubious benefit.

NotSpaghetti Wed 11-Jan-23 00:31:32

My son says "bubble" tea and "boba" tea are different and only one is tapioca "pearls". The other has flavoured gel capsules in it.
I can't remember which was which now. Sorry.
I do know that when I came across it (them) it was tapioca.
Sorry if I've muddied the water here.
I know there was a lot of sugar in it.

It’s disgusting, my husband ordered it once, I tried it.
For me it was the equivalent of a bushtucker trial.

I’d never heard of it until a Singaporean niece was staying and said she’d bought some in our town centre. She likes it - can’t say I fancy it, though.

My GDs in London have been drinking this for at least five years. Unheard of here in SWWales though.

Joseanne, I tried it, twice - and found it disgusting. My granddaughters love it. You might as well get a cold, sweet drink - and just dump a packet of jelly sweets in it!

The nearby shop that sells it (London) also makes fritter/waffle things - equally disappointing. What's wrong with ice cream or coffee and cake?

LOUISA1523 Wed 11-Jan-23 18:20:51

Its vile

Purpledaffodil Wed 11-Jan-23 18:24:44

As mentioned above, it’s very popular in Singapore. Not keen myself as it feels like drinking frogspawn. Not that I have tried. 🤢

I've had both mango and peach bubble tea. And the popping bubbles are gorgeous.

Not sure I'd like the matcha version. I'm not keen on matcha powder, so that is probably a no for me.

Nice with a mochi, although some of them can be a bit sickly. I like the fruity ones though.

Thank you. I'm not sure, I think I will need to be in the mood to try it!

It is very popular in Asia and here amongst those of Asian origins. It’s pretty freely available now. I had a taste of some in Costco because they were handing out free samples. I wouldn’t rave about it but it isn’t bad. Nice on a hot day.

It less of a taste and more of a feel. Less than delicious in my opinion!

Joseanne Wed 11-Jan-23 22:17:36

It came up on my taste of London news. They like to be ahead.

Tapioca just brings back horrible memories of the only school dinner pudding I didn’t like. Tadpoles we used to call it.

I've eaten bush tucker food in the bush.
Nothing like something on IACGMOOH.

However, I would draw the line at tapioca, kava or any tapioca tea.

🤮

There are two kinds - fruit and milk. I don't fancy the milky/tapioca stuff, but the fruit is very refreshing. It's basically a soft drink (eg cherry juice) with bubbles of a contrasting flavour in it. The bubbles remind me of smaller versions of those bath pearls that used to be in fashion when I was young, but they are filled with fruit juice rather than bath oil. You drink it through a wide straw, so the bubbles don't get stuck, and the contrast between the two flavours is lovely.

Don't knock it till you've tried it grin. It is widely available in Chinatown areas or near universities.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 12-Jan-23 10:20:54

It sounds like frogspawn.

GagaJo Thu 12-Jan-23 13:57:19

I'm with you Doodledog. I love the fruity ones. Think they're quite high in sugar though so I've not been tempted too often.

Rapchiks Fri 03-Feb-23 14:18:03

It's very sweet!

Ilovecheese Fri 03-Feb-23 14:21:33

It is in our local co op. Thank you for explaining what is is, Doodledog and Gagajo. i might give it a go, but hope it is not too sweet.
