Good morning all, here is today's puzzle.

I have borrowed it from someone else's maths site, so thank you Anthony, of Anthony's Mash Up.
I do not know the answer, as I haven't worked it out yet, as I have a blinding headache and working it out is making it even worse! ? I will leave it to all of you to have a go! wink.

What is the weight of each item?

JackyB Fri 10-Apr-20 09:03:55

I now see that the algebra method would have saved me the guesswork in my method, so it would be the best way for larger numbers or more complicated problems. Thanks Willa!

willa45 Thu 09-Apr-20 21:57:12

smilesmilesmile Thanks Marydoll and Doodle! I really, really tried not to peek, but couldn't help seeing a lot of answers, so had to overcompensate by providing more solid 'proof'.
Marydoll, sorry you're 'under the weather. Hope you're better tomorrow, so we can all tackle yet another happily anticipated challenge! flowers

Marydoll Thu 09-Apr-20 20:43:01

Wila, my heartfelt apologies for missing your excellent explanation. My only excuse, I haven't been too well today.

In my defence, I did start the algebraic equation, but just couldn't concentrate!
You can have ???? and the eggs! Bathesheba took the flour.

See you all tomorrow.
Granny Somerset, will be sitting in isolation tomorrow! sad

Doodle Thu 09-Apr-20 20:37:02

willa wow you really know your algebra. I wish you could get in earlier so I could copy your answers. Miss would be well impressed.
squiffy hope your dog is ok and not ill after eating my sandals. I didn’t mind really I don’t like them. ?
Miss I hope you’re feeling better.
Miss I bought you an Easter Egg ......but it hatched ? !

Bathsheba Thu 09-Apr-20 20:17:22

Ooh Miss, can I have some flour please Miss? Then I can make a flour bomb for when the head teacher comes in

GrannySomerset you can sit next to me tomorrow as long as you promise to tell Jeffrey in year 8 that I fancy him smile

Marydoll Thu 09-Apr-20 20:11:57

Bathsheba, thank you so much for explaining the process.
??for you, as a bonus, you can have either some eggs or self raising flour. I believe they are in very short supply.

I asked my daughter to pick up a chicken for me, like her father, she isn't so good at following a shopping list.
She left a large turkey at the back door.

You are invited to Easter dinner with all the trimmings (I'll have to get rid of it somehow). Just remember the two metre rule and spread yourselves about!?

Hopefully I will be back on form tomorrow!

Callistemon Thu 09-Apr-20 18:29:12

Stop cheating, GrannySomerset, I saw you copying from Bathsheba
But I won't tell Miss

GrannySomerset Thu 09-Apr-20 18:04:40

Thank you Bathsheba. Can I sit next to you tomorrow?

Bathsheba Thu 09-Apr-20 18:01:34

Bread is 14 because 2 of them is 28. So take bread away from right hand image and you have 1 wine + cheese = 18.

In the left hand image 2 wine + cheese = 30. Therefore it follows that the extra bottle of wine is 12 (30-18). Leaving the cheese at 6.

willa45 Thu 09-Apr-20 17:45:19

I'm here.....whew! What? She's handing out prizes already? Can I at least make the a case for leniency! smile Six hours ahead of me and I have to play catch up

OK here goes:
Image represents three different equations:
2x +z =30
2y = 28
x+y+z=32

Solved for Y first
2y = 28
y=28/2
y= 14

Solve for Z:
2 (18-z) +z = 30
36 - 2z + z =30
-z = 30-36
-z = -6
z= 6

Solve for X next (substituting values of y and z):
x + 14 + 6 = 32
x + 20 = 32
x = 32-20
x=12

12 oz bottle
14 oz bread
6 oz cheese

Oopsadaisy3 Thu 09-Apr-20 17:19:43

Miss , I finished mine ever so early and the rest probly just copied me, but my dog ate the answer.

Here’s an apple for you ......?

JackyB Thu 09-Apr-20 17:17:02

Sorry, I followed instructions and answered before reading any further and was expecting Miss to come along with the answer at 7 pm which is 8 pm our time. It's only just 6 pm now.

Once I'd figured out the bread was 14 oz (half of 28), and that the other two items therefore had to add up to 32 - 14 = 18 oz, I just took consecutive even numbers from 30 until I had 2 which added up to 18.

Even numbers for the weight of the cheese because I wasn't expecting fractions and 30 is an even number so the weight of 2 Wine bottles together would therefore have to be a whole even number.

I could have done it by algebra but the thinking would basically have been the same.

JackyB Thu 09-Apr-20 17:09:15

Cheese is 6 oz, wine is 12 oz, bread is 14 oz.

JenniferEccles Thu 09-Apr-20 16:57:51

The bread was 14 each which made it easy to work out the cheese and wine/ketchup.

Squiffy Thu 09-Apr-20 16:49:11

Doodle I was too blush blush blush to bring the dog today after yesterday's shameful 'performance'! I didn't think Miss Doll would be able to cope with an encore!

Doodle Thu 09-Apr-20 15:25:25

I’ll explain how I got the answer Miss I kept trying different numbers till I found a combination that worked ?
I failed maths too. Sorry Miss.
Hope your headache is better Miss. Have I just made it worse? ?

Gemini17892 Thu 09-Apr-20 15:16:02

Oh no.
I wrote it down wrong. I did get it honest.
Bottle=12
Cheese=6
Bread=14

PS I know no one cares. ?????

Gemini17892 Thu 09-Apr-20 15:12:07

Bottle =14
Cheese=6
Bread=12

Doodle will you stop sucking up to
??‍?. ???

You got the prize yesterday. What was it ?

Marydoll Thu 09-Apr-20 15:06:09

Gold stars for all of you.?

For an extra star, would anyone like to explain how they got the answer?

GrannySomerset Thu 09-Apr-20 15:00:59

Please miss I don’t know how to work this out (O level maths failed) so need an explanation. Then I might be able to attempt tomorrow’s puzzle. I do words rather than numbers,
.

Doodle Thu 09-Apr-20 14:53:46

Wot a clever class we are. Do you think Miss will give us all a gold star #everhopeful ??

JenniferEccles Thu 09-Apr-20 14:32:49

And I bet you can still recite them Callistemon can’t you? !!
We recited our tables every single morning at primary school and they kind of sank in without us realising.

Do children still do that I wonder?

gillybob Thu 09-Apr-20 14:28:43

Well it looks like a Heinz ketchup to me Bathsheba and whaddaya mean “an alcy like the rest of us” ? It’s been over 40 years since I was last caught sitting behind the pub wall drinking cider !

Thank you for waiting with me Doodle and yes miss it did take two of us to go . wink

Callistemon Thu 09-Apr-20 14:19:57

We woz taught proper in our day wasn’t we?!!

JenniferEccles I don't think I woz taught that kind of exciting thing back in the Dark Ages.
It was just times tables recited every single morning.

Doodle Thu 09-Apr-20 13:59:27

Sorry jennifer mine was more luck than judgement.?
