Can we eat it tomorrow?

Should have known better than send idiot husband shopping. He bought a chicken (£15!!) and I’ve just gone to put it in the oven and notice it says Use by 8th June - that’s today!

Don’t these bloody men ever check the dates? I’m fuming as I’d planned to make it do 2-3 meals.

So my question is....seeing as it clearly says USE BY and the fact it’s chicken, is it going to be 100% safe to eat tomorrow? My gut feeling is I’m taking a risk here.

Yes it will be fine. Cook it and chill it straight away.

I agree. If there is any left over I would freeze it immediately and have at a later date but not too late, within a month.

I would not allow that idiot to buy any food in future. At that price you will be bankrupt in no time.

Charleygirl do you think they do it on purpose so I won’t ask him again.

It’s the size of a small turkey too!! ???

Is it too late to take it back they shouldn’t be selling it as use by on same day! If not I agree thoroughly cooked and then frozen it will be fine.
I am not a meat eater but how on earth did he pay £15 for a chicken?

As long as it’s cooked thoroughly it will be fine. After cooking, it will keep for a few days in the fridge. All the bugs will be killed and use by date won’t make a difference. The use by date doesn’t mean it should be all eaten by that date, for a product that is going to be cooked. It’s different for pre-cooked, chilled products but there’s still some leeway.

Just ate some sausages for lunch that were meant to be used by 1st June?. Husband cooked them and we didn’t notice anything wrong. We’re both retired microbiologists, but might be very retired soon if we keep eating out of date food!

It ll be fine I think we worry about these darned dates far too much if it looks ok and smells ok eat it up and enjoy your ‘turkey’

Yes it will be fine . Use by dates are a guide only and we should use our eyes and noses to see if product is ok . It will also be good to eat for next couple of days once cooked ....

Thanks for all that ??
