Tired all the time

Is this normal as we get older?
I go to bed early, sleep reasonably well but get sleepy and often cold mid afternoon.
I put it down to feeling a bit lonely and bored but even when I'm with my lively DGC I still want to lie down.
I had a call on WhatsApp just now and 3 yr old DGC said "are you still in bed grandma?"
Any suggestions?

Under-active thyroid is my first thought, especially because you are feeling cold as well as tired. It took me years to get a diagnosis as I was borderline on the blood test for a long time, but I felt terrible. As I already had M.E. all my symptoms were blamed on that.

If you are tired and cold you might have an under active thyroid ( I am being checked for this at the moment) Perhaps ask your GP for some blood tests for this and maybe anaemia? Sorry you are not feeling yourself

Sorry Sparklefizz I see our posts crossed

Grammaretto Sat 23-Mar-19 17:15:21

Thank you . I had my thyroid checked about 10 yrs ago because my sister had an underactive one but my levels were normal then. I had a faulty parathyroid gland which I had removed. No further treatment.
I think I will make an appointment if I can't just blame my age. wink

I lost a fair bit of weight and I blame that for feeling cold and exhausted during the day.I have recently bought some iron supplements and I'm not nearly as cold as I was but still falling asleep at odd times .I do have a gynae issue and have had some heavy bleeding so it could just be that .Maybe I'll see my GP .

I often get tired Mid afternoon and have a nap and still sometimes nod off in tv programmes in the evening
Just go wit( the flow and accept it’s all part of your body winding down

A lot of people seem to be short of Vitamin D, just a thought

EllanVannin Sat 23-Mar-19 17:54:26

I've noticed it takes me longer and longer to get cracking in the mornings and I'm sure I wouldn't bother if I didn't have to do-------but I won't give in to it. I know I'm not anaemic and I eat and sleep well, but I think weekends are worse as everybody does their own thing so you tend not to see anyone which lengthens the day and the boredom.

Don't know how old you are Grammarreto but I know that, at 77, I could sometimes cry at how tired I get. Trying to learn to accept it.

EllanVannin Sat 23-Mar-19 18:09:17

Gonegirl, it doesn't get much easier either as I'll be 79 this year sad

Gonegirl Sat 23-Mar-19 18:14:39

No it surely doesn't EllanV.

Grammaretto Sat 23-Mar-19 18:15:37

I've just turned 70. Autocorrect wanted me to write 79! Maybe it knows something I don't.
I feel a lot better after a nap. I get up quite early and I'm best in the mornings.
Lack of Vitamin D could be a problem. I can't wait for some warmer weather. We're going on holiday next month.

Last time I went to the GP and told him I was tired all the time, he said 'me too'.

Gonegirl Sat 23-Mar-19 18:30:13

grin Very helpful.

EllanVannin Sat 23-Mar-19 19:03:48

I think a lot might be to do with whatever medication you take too.

Grammaretto Sat 23-Mar-19 22:14:09

I don't take any medication. I do seem to worry a lot so I wonder if anxiety can cause tiredness.

I like your useful doctor's response Katy
Night night. Off to bed now.

I am a fairly energetic person but I often find myself putting on a jumper when we sit down for a snack lunch. Even if the weather is warm I feel cold shortly after I've eaten. It takes about an hour for my energy levels to get back to normal and then I'm good to go again.

There was a documentary about Prince Charles around the time of his seventieth birthday where he stated he never eats lunch because if he does he immediately feels tired so wouldn't be able to cope with any afternoon commitments.

Nice to know we're in good company. grin

It must be a seventy something age thing.

I am with you Gram and fight fatigue on a daily basis. I have an under active thyroid and they have decreased my tablets, when I want them to increase them ?

I sleep for at least an hour after lunch. I often want to go to sleep at about 8.30 at night and do all I can to keep myself awake, mainly on my IPad.

I take Vit D, walk every day, eat sensibly and am still tired. The doctor said to me the majority of her patients complain of tiredness.

Nandalot Sat 23-Mar-19 23:04:27

Grammareto, do have your thyroid checked. I was feeling exhausted, had to pull myself up stairs. Tests revealed my thyroid was very over active. When I asked the doctor why I felt so tired and weak rather than full of energy, he said it is because the body is working at overdrive and the tiredness is the result, so it could be an over or an under active one in your case.

Katyj Sun 24-Mar-19 06:37:59

Hi, have a check up just to make sure, but I feel cold after lunch too, takes about an hour you warm up, then I feel like a nap.I'm in my early 60s and still working, so don't think disappearing for a nap would go down well blush

Anja Sun 24-Mar-19 07:07:19

Have your ‘bloods’ done. Under active thyroid, type 2 diabetes, low iron levels, all sorts of reasons.

sarahanew Sun 24-Mar-19 10:13:33

I was always tired - still working full time and I had no energy to do anything other than work and sleep. Had blood tests, diagnosed as pre-diabetic, have changed my diet and after just a few weeks I have energy again - it's great! Go get some blood tests done

Magrithea Sun 24-Mar-19 10:22:39

Also ask them to check iron levels

tiredoldwoman Sun 24-Mar-19 10:25:48

I got bloods taken 2 weeks ago to check things before surgery . It revealed that I'm anaemic so have been given iron tablets . 10 days later I feel fantastic , blues have gone and life feels sunny ! hurrah ! Hope you have a simple solution too, Grammaretto. x
