Carbimazole - intolerance?

I am taking Carbimazole for an overactive thyroid. I've been taking it for about 3 weeks, and am suffering from horrible bloating and wind. It's very uncomfortable, and more than a bit embarrassing.

The leaflet that came with the tablets mentions all sorts of possible side effects, and 'upset stomach' is one of them, but there is no mention of gassiness.

Has anyone else taken Carbimazole, and if so, did you have windy side-effects?

I don't have thyroid trouble, but used to be a nurse.
Dyspepsia seems to be a common side effect.
It might be a good idea to go back to your G P and talk over the symptoms with them. There could be another anti thyroid drug that would suit you better, or you may be able to take something along side to alleviate the windines.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

Doodle, the charity Thyroid UK have some advice on things on their website. Unfortunately, I know nothing about overactive thyroid. Return to your doctor and ask about the issues.

I have been on Carbimazole for a year. No trouble at all with my stomach because of it. My problem has been weight gain, over 20 pounds during the time I was on a high dose (for me) of 25mg. At least taking Carbimazole and the consequences of completely over-rode any of the symptoms I had initially which prompted me to see the doctor. I hope they can come up with an answer for you Doodledog.

Thanks all.

I will try to speak to my doctor, but getting an appointment is really difficult.

I am seeing an endocrinologist as well as my GP, but appointments with him are even more difficult to arrange.

I took Carbimazole several years ago and can recall no digestive problems. I hope your GP is able to sort your problems.
Alima, I too gained weight, about 3 stone, which I eventually managed to lose after finishing the treatment, by alternate day fasting.

I have been taking Carbimazole for 5 years. No digestive problems so far, but many other symptoms due to relapses. Make sure you report all adverse symptoms to your Endocrinologist /GP as with this drug it is important. Thyroid forums and a local support group can also be useful.
