Hello 👋

Here is the new thread!
Thank you to regular and irregular posters all.

Especially those such as Silverling and Charleygirl who have provided so much advise and support. (There are lots of other lovely posters, but too many to list).

As well as advice, there is also much wisdom and kindness.

I will link to the first and second threads below.

Wherever you are on your replacement journey, you are most welcome to join us here smile

I agree, we are about to get to our 3000 post any moment now
So I will create thread number 4 and include those dancers which are so helpful in seeking our often invisible posts on active.

Agree it would be good to keep this thread going, I found it very helpful .
I saw my Osteopath on Friday , he is a wonder guy , immediately after the session my back and unoperated hip felt so much better. If you find a good osteopath it’s worth the £55 .
Exercise is definitely the best thing but perhaps not standing on a pair of steps decorating! I’m nearly finished renovating my late DH’s “study” ( hell hole) back into a small bedroom and with DS help looking very nice!

Diggingdoris I could flex to 90 degrees very quickly post-op. My knee was too painful for me to exercise so like Aveline I did not bother and I had no ill effects. It took just over 6 weeks for me to tolerate the pain I had but slowly my knee got better.

Sleeping was difficult but once I could lie on the operated side to sleep and with adequate pillows, I was fine.

Sounds like your knee is very new. Dont forget you are older now and recovery may be a bit slower. Do you have anyone at home to help..? Certainly recovery from knee operations is probably harder and longer than for a new hip.
It might help to get in touch with the hospital. Just for reassurance.
I had trouble sleeping and used lightweight sleeping tablets after my operation, pfenerghan which were prescribed.

My first one was done 7 years ago. Loads of swelling, hardly any bruising. This time loads of bruising hardly any swelling. Yes the pain is the same, very wearing and because it keeps me awake at night I'm so drained. But I know I must carry on with the exercises and keep moving. Just so hard when I'm so tired.

OFf for lunch, 🥗 see you all later 👋

silverlining48 Thu 23-Nov-23 14:23:19

I think it’s probably worth doing a fourth chapter but need to include the dancing girls as it makes it so much easier to check if we hit Active or more likely don’t.

silverlining48 Thu 23-Nov-23 14:21:21

We are about to come to the end of this thread , think 1000 posts and you are out.

Charleygirl5 Thu 23-Nov-23 12:32:55

Just wanted to bump it up as we were on the way out as usual.

silverlining48 Wed 22-Nov-23 15:29:41

Hips and knees are bread and butter operations, done all the time, and it’s easy to forget it is quite major surgery.

silverlining48 Wed 22-Nov-23 15:27:03

Bruises are funny things. 😱

silverlining48 Wed 22-Nov-23 15:25:41

Thanks for coming back ginny. Glad your bruises are fading now.
I broke some toes in July and the foot is still bruised, but nowhere near as bad as it was at the time.

ginny Wed 22-Nov-23 15:06:29

I think it was me that mentioned having a lot of bruising last week. Now 7 weeks post op. there is still some bruising but it is definitely fading. As said everyone is different but if you are concerned contact your GP or the ward you were on during your hospital stay.

Charleygirl5 Wed 22-Nov-23 13:46:03

My last knee was replaced in 2018 and although I had a lot of bruising it did not travel as far as my foot. It will take at least a couple of weeks to fade but you are not going to the ball just yet so there is time! I was more bothered with the pain.

Welcome Diggingdoris
How old is your new knee? I think there was a similar question posted recently so might be worth looking back through the thread.
Otherwise am sure someone will come along shortly but from my own experience I had little bruising when my hip was replaced last year, but would imagine bruising would be normal .

Diggingdoris Wed 22-Nov-23 12:43:40

Just joining this page with a new knee. Anyone out there who has bruises all the way down the leg and on the foot?
This didn't happen 7 years ago when I had the other one done. But this was different hosp and surgeon.

The cost of surgery and 3 days hospital stay is about £6,000. Then my husband and I went to a medical spa for 10 days about 2,000 euros. There's a doctor and nurse there on call day and night. I asked for a painkiller injection and a mild sleeping tablet each night. I am looking forward to being pampered! Therapeutic massage, cyrotherapy and daily physio. They won't operate if you are not fit for surgery I know people who have to get their blood pressure etc down. They made sure I was fit to fly and give you blood thinners if necessary. 3 hrs flight home with airport assistance. Some of the people I met flew in from Canada and USA. I thought the flight home would be uncomfortable but I was fine, I rotated my ankles etc. I am in a Facebook group with other people and no one has had any problems but I don't think the Nhs would refuse to treat you if you developed problems later. It's essential medical surgery after all and it's saving the Nhs £1000s. The Nhs used to send patients to Lithuania for surgery before brexit.

Hadn’t thought about the flight , isn’t that a bit risky?

I wouldn’t have wanted to fly so soon either.
My surgeon was very hot on blood clot prevention. Stockings, injections, disprin and plenty of water to drink. Plenty of movement.
Apart from the discomfort of air travel in general at the best of times.

Charleygirl5 Tue 21-Nov-23 13:08:24

OMG I understand the reasoning behind it but I would not like to travel on a plane having had a TKR but you have been there before and obviously know you can do it so good luck to you.

I agree, having a TKR done privately here is a ridiculous amount of money.

Good luck.

silverlining48 Tue 21-Nov-23 13:06:12

What happens with follow up appointments? Problems?

silverlining48 Tue 21-Nov-23 13:05:17

Curious about the price difference, including cost of accommodation and flights etc?

silverlining48 Tue 21-Nov-23 12:44:17

That is brave but as you have already had one procedure you will know what to expect,
Hope all goes well , do let us know. Good luck
