Sciatica and arthritis

I have been housebound for a little while because of a savage pain in my right hip, thigh, calf and foot. I have been walking in a bent up way to try and lessen the pain in my thigh.

I rang 111 and was given an out of hours appointment on Friday evening. Diagnosis was sciatica and arthritis in my hip.

Advice was to go to my GP for further exploration and I shall ring tomorrow. In the meantime, does any Gransnetter have advice, please, on what I can do to lessen the chances of another sciatic attack and prevent any more damage to the hip. I do like to find ways of helping myself and not relying solely on the NHS. Thank you.

Sorry to hear about your sciatic pain. I would definitely get it checked by your GP. In terms of self help, there are some very good yoga postures specifically aimed at easing sciatica. You can find them using the search bar on YouTube.

This is the exercise that was shown to me by a chiropractor.
You have to stretch that nerve out.
It also helps if you can stretch your tendons ( the ones between bum and knee)
Lay on your back, put scarf or anything suitable round your, keep leg straight brng it up towards you until you feel that tendon pulling. Don’t go too far.

I feel for you I know what it's like. Have you done pain killers to take and a bit water bottle? When you ring the GP don't waffle just say you are in pain and need medical attention.

BB. Points taken.! When I was at the hospital and was asked why I had taken so long to ask for help, I told them I hoped it would go away. The reply was that the older generation are more reluctant to use the NHS because we don't want to abuse it.

I found that sleeping with a pillow between my knees if I slept on my side. Or under my knees if I slept on my back helped.I have been getting pain in my hip recently if I move in a certain way, and the pain doesn’t go away. But what I’ve done each time is rub voltarol or ibuprofen round that area and take a couple of codeine tablets at night ( because they make me drowsy) and sleep with a hot water bottle. I do have some exercises somewhere that I was given for sciatica.

Oh and I take turmeric in the form of golden paste for my arthritis. I’m sure it helps.
