Apparently the Saga Zone forum has been closed down because of "bullying and offensive posts". There is some speculation that the site was taken over by trolls. I have visited the site in the past (before I discovered Gransnet!) and found the members very supportive.

Gracesmum - I am sure nobody took your post in the wrong way! I have lost about 2 inches, as my discs have become compressed. Now all my gc are taller than I am, and I don't suppose it will be long before my great gc outgrow me.

I've certainly expanded outwards rather than upwards in the last few years.

I'm not saying sad

Hi everyone. A Sagazone refugee here.sad I am the lady who Messenger heard on the radio day before yesterday. The reason I was upset was because they have stopped me gaining access to the Memorial thread for my partner who died last year.

Saga are making out that the site was full of racist and homophobes. Nothing can be more from the truth.

The happenings on that site in the last few weeks had to be seen to be believed.
There were a few offenders, (about 6, out of hundreds of daily posters) a few months ago, and they were banned, and the offending messages were removed, which was good. These people amounted to a tiny minority of the hundreds of people who posted in the site every day. After they had been banned the site immediately got back to normal.

Then a couple of weeks ago they suddenly started banning members for no reason whatever. They got no notice and no reason was given to them for the banning. If you questioned why your friend had been banned, you , in turn were banned. It was bizarre in the extreme.

I myself was banned for telling members to look at my friend’s posts and tell me if they could see any reason for her to be banned. They banned me, removed my post and removed the entire “room” that my friend always posted in, so that no one could look at it.

I actually met my partner on the site in 2009. Very sadly he died last year. There is a memorial thread on Sagazone full of beautiful comments by all our Saga friends, many of whom we met, visited, and even stayed with. Sagazone removed the link from his profile so that I couldn’t access it to copy it. Then they banned him. They Banned a dead man!! It has always been their policy NOT to remove the profiles of people who have died, and other peoples are still there but my Franks has gone. I know all this sounds unbelievable but I promise you it is what has been happening there. We felt as though the lunatics were running the asylum!

For a company that is supposed to be all about the elderly, they have treated their members appallingly.

Sorry all, didn't mean to ramble so much but we are all so incensed and upset at what amounts to bizarre bullying by a large company.

I was one of the founder members of Sagazone and prior to that Saga Circles. Like many I have written to Saga management to try to persuade them not to kill off Sagazone. There may have been some unpleasantness but so little that you wouldn't notice it. The trouble only started a few months ago when the moderators seemed to get heavy handed suspending and banning members for very minor infringements of house rules. The only house rule they had broken was to challenge the moderators, nothing offensive in the accepted meaning of the term.

I've kept the same username I had on Sagazone so my old SZ chums can recognize me.

Messageboards and forums seem to be getting it in the neck at the moment. I see The Archers messageboard is going to be closed. Regular listeners have been complaining about current storylines and it doesn't seem to be going down too well at the Beeb. Whenever I looked in at the messageboard (not very often) there were some hilarious postings pointing out the sillier aspects of the storylines.

I haven't listened to The Archers for months but it'll soon be time to spend Sunday mornings in the greenhouse again so I'll be tuning in.

It's a fine line though isnt it jo8.
I tend to think if the ref in a match has made a decision then other players having a discussion in public about the rights and wrongs of the refs decision is just not on - however politely it is done. Play on and accept the refs decision.
I have in the past politely questioned a decision behind the scenes about whether or not a post was illegal (rather than against the rules) and we resolved it amicably. But I feel this is the way to go, not undermining the ref in public.

Some of the best threads on here are the ones where we have a moan about GNHQ. grin

Like Merlot I read about the Archers forum closing. The article said that forums are becoming old hat rather, as more people are preferring Facebook and Twitter.

feetlebaum Sat 16-Feb-13 09:59:21

The BBC boards were all moderated to death anyway.

Facebook is far too irritating, although I have made contact with a lot of 'lost' friends and ex-colleagues through it - and I can't be bothered to tweet.

Ah well, before Forums there were Newsgroups - I wonder how many of those are still going? My early forays on the www were made without a browser, using a terminal emulator...

j08 Sat 16-Feb-13 10:05:18

feetlebaum you are very oooold!!! wink

j08 Sat 16-Feb-13 10:05:29

Twitter is fun.

janeainsworth Sat 16-Feb-13 10:07:23

j08 trhe version I read about the Archers forum closing was that the forum users were rubbishing and making jokes about the storylines etc, rather like when Waitrose invited its customers to tweet about why they liked shopping there and it backfired on themgrin

j08 Sat 16-Feb-13 10:28:02

always this

soop Sat 16-Feb-13 13:51:17

feetlebaum. Facebook gives me the willies. So much of what is said is self-congratulatory and "samey". As for tweeting...I leave that to the birds. This forum takes up far too much of my time, and will continue to do so, because I enjoy it.
