British expats in France and other EU countries

Despite Mrs May repeated reassurances, it is now clear, that

BRITONS living in France will instantly be deemed illegal immigrants if the UK crashes out of the European Union without an exit deal, Emmanuel Macron’s government has proposed.

That will also mean the end of reciprocal health care and any kind of social support in case circumstances have changed, like losing a spouse, or illness or accident, etc, requiring any kind of assistance.

And you wonder why people are so worried, some of them actually suffering from severe anxiety, depression and other illnesses.

Apologies, too, for misreading you, GabriellaG

Apologies * MaizieD

Maisie
I do realise that I need not read it and I don't but there is no getting away from the headlines online, in the papers and on tv.
That is what I meant, not anything alluding to Brexit on GN.

Fennel Sun 21-Oct-18 09:58:15

ps another thing - you have to declare all sources of revenue. Also send them a list of all bank accounts so that they can check up if necessary.

Fennel Sun 21-Oct-18 09:32:30

We were in the same position as Mamie taxwise.
Except that we also had rent from an english property, which was taxed in the UK . Although the people at the french tax office were't happy about that. They conceded in the end.
We had 2 lots of tax returns to fill in very year.

MawBroon Sun 21-Oct-18 08:43:05

Thanks Mamie I just wasn’t clear on that.

Mamie Sun 21-Oct-18 05:27:18

MawBroon basically you pay in your host country. However pensions from government, local, government, teachers, military, some NHS etc are taxed at source in the UK. I pay tax on my occupational pension in the UK and tax on my state pension in France. The double taxation treaty (not EU) means that you don't pay tax twice.

There will then, hopefully, be less chat on the subject. Que sera sera.

Good heavens, Gabriella! You're not obliged to read any of it, you know.

I have only read page one of thread but read in paper today that Macron got his translation wrong as he was speaking in English. French aids have now clarified Brits will not need to get visa to visit but any Brits living in France will need to apply for French residency.

GabriellaG Sat 20-Oct-18 21:51:23

Nandalot

Why?

GabriellaG Sat 20-Oct-18 21:48:33

MawBroon
It depends on the tax rules of each country. One of my AC lives abroad but not in an EU country. They pay taxes in whichever country they earned the money, however, the money earned abroad cannot be transferred out of the country without incurring swingeing tax penalties here in the UK.

MawBroon Sat 20-Oct-18 21:36:52

I hesitate to ask this but it is a genuine enquiry
If you live abroad and your pension or other income comes from the U.K. whose tax do you pay - your “host”country or the country where the payment originates?
I am assuming permanent residency abroad apart from the limited number of days you may return to the U.K. without being deemed to live here.

GabriellaG Sat 20-Oct-18 21:33:32

I'm all for leaving the damned EU ASAP.
There will then, hopefully, be less chat on the subject. Que sera sera.

paddyann
If you are talking about your own 'countrymen' living abroad, they are referred to as expats and incomers as immigrants. If you were a Spaniard or from Dubai, you would talk about Brits living their respective countries as being immigrants and their own countrymen living here as being expats.

oldbatty Sat 20-Oct-18 20:21:37

can't be bothered, you tell me.

Jalima1108 Sat 20-Oct-18 20:11:20

I didn't say that oldbatty

You asked
Which UK citizens leave to go and work the land overseas?
Check it out

oldbatty Sat 20-Oct-18 17:26:04

shake away, so people who are scrabbling about here on Universal Credit are getting flights to go and farm abroad?

Welshwife Sat 20-Oct-18 16:16:26

The French Govt have discussed what the legal position of Brits living in France will be at Brexit hour if nothing is done by France. They held the meeting so that plans can be put in place quickly without needing to go through the Senate etc. The govt have said that the U.K. citizens in France will have the same rights as now as long as French citizens in U.K. retain all theirs - so really our fate is in the hands of TM.

Jalima1108 Sat 20-Oct-18 16:11:24

What on earth are you talking about Jalima? Which UK citizens leave to go and work the land overseas?
[shakes head in despair]

Having live in Menorca with Spanish residency, we now live in France, with French residency (not nationality). The biggest concern for me is my husband, who has Parkinsons , dementia and cancer ....there is no way he could travel back to the UK if we had to at midnight on March 29th grin if we no longer had the rights of residency. I am fortunate that I own a house in the UK and if he were fit, we could return (please note anyone else in the same position ...yippee we could get back our WFA (but only if you apply before the end of March 2019) just think...bus passes, cold weather payments, certain death for the elderly and infirm with no NHS when all the staff return to their country of origin, no care for the elderly ... these are the threats ! I actually read on a FRENCH forum yesterday a comment by one French woman to questions from ex pat Brits ....if you don't like it, GO HOME ....after all, isn't that what a lot of people living in the UK say about immigrants ! no difference there then ! the only thing I have to complain about is MAY's confirmation that EU citizens in the UK will, after registration, be entitled to live and work in the UK as they are now. There is no such reassurance for ex pat Brits in the EU ...we are saving the UK millions in WFA, other entitlements and benefits ...just imagine the riots in the streets if we all returned penniless ...better get a tent and a boat .....or claim asylum here in France (get a French passport, benfits (which NO 'foriegner' coming to France is immediately entitled to, unlike anyone entering the UK !) which is of course right ! We would be hard pushed, despite paying NI, taxes, etc in the all our working lives ...to be entitled to ANY help whatever ! when we are called out for leaving the UK in the first place, just remember the money we have saved the UK economy ! wink

Jalima1108 Sat 20-Oct-18 15:23:26

Interesting thought oldbatty

It's OK, then, for them foreigners to come and do back-breaking work but not them UK citizens

hmm
Oh, I forgot, them UK citizens are quite happy to go and work hard on farms overseas.

Strange world.

oldbatty Sat 20-Oct-18 15:17:25

Grampie, too right. Get "them" back in the fields. Pity we don't have the climate for growing cotton.

Jalima1108 Sat 20-Oct-18 14:57:38

and that Macron said these rumors were fake news.
But he did say it
Then later said it was a mistake because he was speaking in English not his native tongue.

What is clear is that none of it is clear at all.

Grampie Sat 20-Oct-18 14:05:43

GreenGran78

Universal Credit rules backed by sanctions will get them working in the fields and anywhere else where strong backs are needed.

...unless, of course, we go back to “money for nothing”.
