After days of denial and trying to bulldoze the crash site, Iran has finally admitted it was them who shot down the airliner.
In the face of the evidence and various countries pushing to be admitted they had no choice but to confess.

The world’s largest arms manufacturers have seen their value rise by nearly £14bn in the wake of the assassination of Qassem Soleimani as the confrontation between the United States and Iran fuels expectations of lucrative new defence equipment orders.

Analysis shows that in the 24 hours after the assassination the stock market value of the world’s nine largest listed arms companies rose by $13bn (£10bn). By the afternoon that increase had risen further to $17.9bn (£13.7bn).

One poor young couple had just married in Tehran and were heading back to Canada.

lemongrove Thu 09-Jan-20 21:23:47

That hasn’t happened yet trisher and I don’t think the Iraqis will push for western troops to leave, it may have been a symbolic vote to please Iran.
Canada are saying they believe the Iranians shot down the ukrainian plane carrying mainly those of Iranian backgrounds.

I seem to remember (and I may be wrong) that the very first US deaths in Vietnam were kept very quiet. And there was also something about soldiers being returned in sealed coffins so no-one could see how they had really died. Must Google it.
Any way the US have probably done the Iranians a faavour they have long wanted a clear pathway through Iraq and now it looks like they will get it. Well done Donald!

lemongrove Thu 09-Jan-20 18:29:56

I really doubt that anyone is dead maddyone in those missile strikes. The Iranians gave plenty of warning to the Iraq government ( their soldiers in the same bases as American/ British etc) so they would have been moved ahead of the strikes.
It allowed Iran to put out fake news to appease the people.

A group of mental health professionals have warned Congress it must act urgently to demand Donald Trump undergo an evaluation to determine his continued fitness for office after nearly a week of heightened tensions with Iran.

Jura - it's always been about oil. And the UK is as oil-greedy as other countries.
A few years ago I read that some new vast oilfields had been found in the USA and thought maybe things would settle down. But they didn't.

MerylStreep^You can take out a munitions storage. You can take out an empty building.^

Indeed you can, but the posters who used this euphemism are all talking about other human beings.

Interesting, I wonder what the truth is, are 80 American servicemen and women dead or not? I sincerely hope not.

jura2 Wed 08-Jan-20 17:53:45

Trump says 'Iran has so much untapped potential' - so nothing to do with those newly discovered massive oil fields then sad sad sad

Ilovecheese yes he tweeted early hours, but he has not commented on this latest announcement by the Iranians.

Ilovecheese Wed 08-Jan-20 16:44:00

What I heard was that President Trump tweeted that no one had been hurt by the air strikes.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 08-Jan-20 16:41:39

Iranian Mehr (sp?) state television has reported that 80 American personnel were killed in the air strikes.

USA yet to comment

lemongrove Wed 08-Jan-20 16:22:08

......errrr, not quite yeahbut !

Yehbutnobut Wed 08-Jan-20 14:17:17

Well Trump has achieved one thing, a new unity between Iraq and Iran.

suziewoozie Tue 07-Jan-20 22:15:47

Agree trisher What I do believe I’d that Trump is simply wanting to further his re-election chances

trisher Tue 07-Jan-20 21:13:48

I certainly don't believe everything we are told and I do think we are being fed misinformation a lot of the time. An Iranian professor on Channel 4 news saying that the things which have been said about Aleppo and Syria are not true. Of course he would say that! But I think the US statements are equally questionable. And I don't think killing individuals on foreign soil along wiht their own citizens does anything to further international relations.

suziewoozie Tue 07-Jan-20 20:58:55

Opal why does either side need believing? A bit of scepticism of both wouldn’t go amiss.

Callistemon Tue 07-Jan-20 20:58:52

I am not saying that this act was a good idea, btw, but some posters do seem to be defending the actions of this General.

jura Like many I am so worried for the children of the world, Iran first

By Iran first one would assume you meant Iranian children were your first concern.
I wondered if you had felt the same about the Syrian women and children who have been killed and maimed by Soleimani?
They are celebrating in Idlib.

I just asked the question which arises from your statement.

Opal Tue 07-Jan-20 20:56:08

And you think the Iraqis and the Iranians are being honest? Seriously?

trisher Tue 07-Jan-20 20:53:42

Callistemon neither you nor anyone else can be absolutely certain about who is responsible for all the children killed in Syria. All the participants blame each other.
The Iraquis say that Suleimon was on his way to a meeting with the Iraqi president. They have complained to the US about an attack on their soil which also killed their general. The US are certainly not being honest about things.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 07-Jan-20 20:47:07

Iranian backed militia attacked the US Embassy in Baghdad.

Opal Tue 07-Jan-20 20:43:29

Minimal collateral damage. No civilians were killed.

Callistemon Tue 07-Jan-20 20:43:25

Perhaps I get more regular updates on what is happening in Syria than some other posters who seem to be unaware of how many Syrian children have been killed on the orders of this man.
