Insomnia in older people

Having been a good sleeper all my life, I began to suffer from insomnia 3 years ago. Try as I might I am unable to
manage good restful sleep. I have tried all the usual recommended routes, including eating foods that promote sleep. OTC tablets do not work, prescription tablets help but I do not want to take them regularly.

I wonder how many older people suffer from this long term, and whether I can get any help from Gransnet on this. I think the problem could be that the body does not make the same sleep hormones as we get older. It seems that the medics have done little research on sleep patterns in older people. They seem to always link it with depression etc.

I believe melotonin (SP?) works, however it can only be obtained on prescription in this country, though is freely available OTC abroad
