So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

Also got the Alta recently. So far have managed my 10,000 steps or more on most days. Usually I have to make the effort to go out for a walk to get anywhere near my target. Got home from work today ( teaching a very challenging Yr 5 class) and collapsed on the sofa. Only 6997 steps today.
All this walking is playing havoc with my feet!!

I have the Fitbit Alta which really concentrates my mind on movement. If at the end of the day I haven't reached 10,000 steps I walk around the house until I do. I am not sure if this is good for the carpet though. Unfortunately it doesn't mean that I lose weight, only that I don't put it on - which is fine in theory but I need to lose two stone. I love the Alta because it also alerts me to messages and phone calls on my mobile.

hello Fitbit Fans - just had an email today introducing Fitbit Adventures - looks fun. I use the Fitbit Ap on iPhone and have challenges with my children! This new Adventures thing looks fun and once my holiday visitors have gone home today, I hope to try a new challenge. Too much sitting chatting this summer!
I still have my Zip, but children have the Alta which is wrist worn, but it does remind them to get up and move if they have been sitting too long!
Anyone else going to try the Adventures?

I wonder whether you could sign up for both and be paid twice for the same walking?

On the same theme, there's also this one which I've used for some time:

Get paid for your 10,000 steps! Digital currency pays people to walk

A phone application counts and verifies users' steps, with walkers earning approximately 1 BW$ (Bitwalker dollars) for about 10,000 steps (about five miles)

Well, what great customer service from Fitbit. They are sending me a new silicone case, free of charge. I am very impressed with how quickly they dealt with my emails and look forward to a new pink cover coming next week!

Nanabelle Sat 28-Nov-15 17:52:26

Calling all Fitbit Zip users ……… I bought mine in September 2014 and just recently the end tip of the silicone clip has come off, exposing two bits of metal. Anyone else had a problem like this?
I contacted the Customer Service Fitbit online, and they replied immediately asking for a photo of damaged case, and receipt. I can't find my receipt but have sent a photo! Hopefully they will send a new cover. New ones cost about £12 I think.
It's ok to wear clipped on a jeans pocket, but not inside my bra anymore!! hmm

Letitia, I also wear my pedometer for Body Attack and LBT classes 4 days a week, so yes, those days have a higher count.

Christingle Fri 10-Apr-15 22:56:08

Thank you! I have found they sell pedometers in Argos so that's first on my list for tomorrow. I will walk to town of course and aim to leave the car at home

Leticia Fri 10-Apr-15 22:26:31

Zumba class is my best day- always a high count.

Leticia Fri 10-Apr-15 22:25:21

I have just seen this. I started on January 1st and am doing quite well.
On average I managed 9400 a day for the first 3 months. It is so much easier now the weather is better and April has been well over most days.

shysal Fri 10-Apr-15 22:07:29

Welcome to the club Christingle. I hope you will soon feel the benefit of the extra exercise, let us know how you get on.
I have settled into a routine of doing 6000 steps first thing in the morning, then normal activities over the rest of the day take me up to around 14-16000. My knee injury has resolved itself, so am feeling much fitter.

Christingle Fri 10-Apr-15 21:23:58

I am in! I find walking far quite difficult due to an illness some years back I have nerve damage. Also my job (which is full time ) is at a desk all day. But I am determined to get fitter and healthier having gained two stone in two years. Ouch!

shysal Thu 01-Jan-15 15:58:02

My pedometer works on a bike if you hold it in your hand and knock it with your knees as you pedal!
Have you grown to hate that drumming Santa yet, jingle? It would quickly drive me nuts!

Ana Thu 01-Jan-15 14:25:33

As long as you do ten minutes mad dancing every day you'll be fine, jingl! tchwink

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 01-Jan-15 14:05:58

It all went wrong when I did ten minutes mad dancing to my musical Xmas light-up drumming Father Christmas! Suddenly it shot up to 9000 steps! shock

and the twenty minutes I did on exercise bike, of course, didn't register at all. hmm

Not at all sure a Fitbit will fit in with my lifestyle.

shysal Thu 01-Jan-15 11:50:50

I wish I didn't hate shopping (apart from for food!) as the total adds up quickly that way. I don't think I am normal, as I don't like pubs either. I am glad that I live in a village, every person I saw whilst doing my stint this morning exchanged a 'Happy New Year'

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 01-Jan-15 09:12:30

Shysal I had a Fitbit forced upon me given to me for Xmas. I was amazed at yesterday's result. I only walked into town, round a few shops, and back again! Closely followed by a late pub lunch.

Leticia Thu 01-Jan-15 08:56:20

It is my new year resolution and I started 5 days ago- it certainly gets me out when I wouldn't have bothered.

shysal Thu 01-Jan-15 08:39:34

I live alone, loopyloo, so can please myself. Walking is preferable to my main vices, which are eating and Ebay shopping.blush

loopyloo Thu 01-Jan-15 08:33:50

Ah yes must start doing this again. First will try to find pedometer. Find the post Christmas days difficult, have a cough and all the family is busy so am on my own loads. What do other people do? Too cold for gardening and should be sorting out stuff but have no energy .

shysal Thu 01-Jan-15 08:12:39

I thought you were going to shun us jingle, but nice to hear of your success!
I have been very good, achieving around 13,000 steps each day, getting them done first thing. My weight didn't go up until I made an enormous gateau for Tuesday, after which I gained 2lb. I have given away some of the remainder, frozen 2 slices, and binned the rest this morning. I hate to waste food, but it had to be done!

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 31-Dec-14 23:27:29

Mine is lime green too. I have had it clipped onto my bra all day. Forgot it was there! tchsmile

Nanabelle Wed 31-Dec-14 23:25:04

wow jings, that's good. I have been "forgetting" to wear my fit bit around Christmas! Too much sitting on the sofa instead. Hope the New Year encourages us all to go out and enjoy the lovely cool air and get moving once again. We have one more set of visitors tomorrow, and then back to normal at the weekend. Fitbit will go back on my pocket then!
What colour did you get? Mine is lime green!
