So, it's World Poetry Day next week (Thursday 21 March) and we thought it would be fun to start a poetry thread.

All you have to do is post your best haikus/limericks/poems (no longer than 5 lines) about your grandchildren, DH/DP or anything family orientated.

We might even be able to rustle up a prize for the best one...

Oh bum! I've been working on something for the last month or so, but it wouldn't meet the T's & C's !

I have this little Grandson, he is lovely don't you know

He visits every weekend and never wants to go

I love him oh so dearly he is everything to me

Without his his cheerful presence I just dont know were I'd be

She lies there, this tiny perfect thing - the image of my child -
Sleeping, cheeks soft and pale, her breath but a butterfly wing
No sound save the fall of my tears,
Grieving in vain for her mother's childhood,
times gone, the passing years.......

Getting Barney to School

Oh Barney where's your sun hat, oh Barney where's your book?
Oh Barney where's your school bag? Please, do go and have a look!
Oh Barney have you cleaned your teeth, with toothpaste and a brush?
Oh Barney for Heaven's sake do hurry, we're late and in a rush shock
Oh Barney there's your lunch bag where you left it on the hook!

COMPASS

My house is lovely.
It faces south. Because of that
the sun, when it comes, stays all day.

My husband is handsome.
He exerts a magnetic pull
after all these years.
He centres me.

My children have flown east and west.
Blown about by the winds of change
they manage to stay on course.
But only just.

I head due north.
I trust that what comes next
will be a fair wind, keeping us
steady as she goes.

chuckles aimed at my face
tickling his tummy

Dreaming of you before you were born
Even in sleep I was torn
A newborn baby with half a heart
Darling grandson you had a difficult start
I saw your star herald the dawn

The people in our family used to be:
Big, loud and boring,
Sad, proud and snoring.
Now things have changed, and I'm much bigger,
I really can't stand it when little ones snigger!

At 19 I was keen to bed, at 23 was keen to wed,
At 24 I first was sprogged, then 3 times more my brain was fogged,
At 37 we hit the teens, an easy task by no-one’s means,
For 15 years we roughed it out, with many fights but ne’er a clout,
Then just 5 years of blessed peace, before my grandchild hit the fleece......

There once was a family from Crewe
Whose members were frequently blue
When down in the mouth
They moved themselves south
And took a vacation in Looe.

Litter flittering on dry yellowing grass
An old shoe, laces outstretched as if dead
Just a place we spent time in
A different set of connections
But memories make a place special

My Granny...'' sees to me ''

She's Scottish, I'm English
She says 'breeks' I say 'pants'
'Yer teas ready' I say dinner

Truffles made with porridge oats
Scottish pancakes...my favourite

She bought me a flag
Red, white and blue

I waved it at the royal wedding
Would love to see Buckingham Palace

What does Granny mean.....

Our country no longer exists

I am a great fan of Robert Burns and have tried to

Ma bairns hae aw grown up and mairrit
and hae gi'en tae me mair bairns tae treasure
A luv them aw frae biggest tae wee'st
an thank the Lord a hae been grantit this
pleasure

My beautiful girl makes my heart swell with pride
I hug her and feel very thankful inside
Her firm, rounded belly is pressing on me
We smile as we share a group hug, just us three
My daughter, her own little daughter, and me.

Seems not many of us can keep to the five line stipulation!!

WAITING

for them to be born
to sleep through the night
to sit up
to walk and talk

to start school
make friends
learn to drive
come home safely

to leave home
to graduate
to get a job
find a mate
get promoted

to keep well

Forever waiting for trains and planes
for them to come
to go
to be happy.

soop Fri 15-Mar-13 15:50:36

Child of my child,
Precious to me,
So little, so loved,
You've taken my heart,
Child of my child.

ON BEING A PARENT

Our children stand firm
apprenticed to glean from us
What we learn too.

merlotgran Fri 15-Mar-13 17:28:44

Paddling pools and puppy dogs and picnics every day,
Will the sun come out to shine or will it hide away?
Lists of things to make and do and joyful games to play,
Longing for the summer when our grandsons come to stay.
