On the box: What we're watching this week

Finding yourself doing more channel surfing than binge-watching at the moment? Well don't worry, because gransnetters are on hand with their recommendations for the best films and programmes on the box this week, from nature to Netflix.

On television...

Poldark

Poldark

Everyone's favourite shirtless, scythe-wielding hunk is back for series two of the popular period drama. The drought is officially over as, come Sunday, Demelza and Ross return to our screens - and to their perilous situation.

Gransnetters say:

"Really enjoying Victoria but can't wait for Poldark..."

Next on: Sunday 4 September at 9pm on BBC1

Porridge

Porridge

With mixed reviews from gransnetters, this rehash (or sequel?) to the classic comedy is worth a watch, if only for the curiosity factor. The new series focuses on Fletch's grandson, who now finds himself locked up for rather more modern-sounding 'cybercrimes'.

Gransnetters say:

"The Porridge one was great. He was perfectly believable as Fletch's grandson, even sounded like him occasionally. I really hope this wasn't a one off."

Next on: Sunday 4 September on BBC1

The Great British Bake Off

Great British Bake Off

If you missed out on the first episode of Britain's favourite baking programme, quick - catch up! Episode two kicks off this week, and we'll be planted firmly in front of the television, keeping our beady eyes out for soggy bottoms and early standout contestants.

Gransnetters say:

"The first one of this series was great and it promises to be every bit as good as previous years."

Next on: Wednesday 31 August at 8pm

Victoria

Victoria

ITV's new mini-series about the life and reign of a young Queen Victoria, played by Doctor Who actress Jenna Coleman. The series kicks off as an eighteen-year-old Princess Victoria comes to inherit the throne after the death of her uncle King William IV. Expect lavish costumes and the brooding good looks of Rufus Sewell as Prime Minister Lord Melbourne.

Gransnetters say:

"I really enjoyed it and am totally captivated by the face of the young actress who plays Victoria. Looking forward to the rest."

Next on: Sunday 4 September on ITV

On Netflix...

The Good Wife

The Good Wife

A Gransnet favourite, this series has many of us hooked. With fantastic acting from Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife follows the embarrassed wife of a corrupt politician...who refuses to be the embarrassed wife of a corrupt politician. Not forgetting that she's also a hot shot lawyer...

Gransnetters say:

"I loved The Good Wife, great to see Michael J Fox acting again, and his part was great."

The Way We Were

The Way We Were

Here's your chance to relive the classic 1973 love story, as it's just arrived on Netflix. After meeting at university, activist Katie (Barbara Streisand) and footloose WASP Hubbell (Robert Redford) reconnect years later and marry. The film follows the couple as they lose touch and reconnect over the course of their lives, and is hailed as one of Hollywood's greatest love stories. Grab a box of tissues before you press play.

Gransnetters say:

"Well, I'm about to sit down with a cuppa (and maybe a couple of biscuits) and watch The Way We Were. I love this film, and Barbara Streisand, so much."
