This is a long shot but did anyone on here train or work at The Middlesex Hospital London W1? I have started a forum for ex Middlesex people and thought there might be someone on here.

West Middlesex, yes, in the early 70s.

Alea Tue 24-May-16 18:17:28

As a nurse GJ?

granjura Tue 24-May-16 18:25:03

Afraid not- as the gf and then wife of a junior dr- more or less living on site.

Charleygirl Tue 24-May-16 22:14:28

The West Middlesex is not the same hospital as The Middlesex W1. I think that the West Middlesex is around Isleworth area whereas the Middlesex is/was a stone's throw from Oxford Street,it is now flats.

tanith Tue 24-May-16 23:02:51

You are right Charleygirl they are not the same hospital .

Alea Tue 24-May-16 23:11:53

Am I right in thinking it was the sale of the old Middlesex site that enabled University College to build its big shiny new hospital,on the Euston Road? DD had her baby there last week and it was very clean, modern sleek and shiny!! Also very quiet in the EGA wing, a lovely soothing atmosphere in the birthing centre. Aah.

Hi there I was a Middlesex student then staff Nurse .Training has stood me in good stead for my years,as a nurse ..

Yes, Alea that and at least another site were sold to help pay for the new UCLH. I have mixed feelings about the new UCLH because my aunt, now dead, was treated there in her 90's and not very well.

Charleygirl Wed 25-May-16 09:21:17

was- too early to think about grammar.

Alea Wed 25-May-16 09:34:56

Sorry to hear that Charleygirl. Each person's own experience obviously colours how they feel about a hospital. I am happy that DD had excellent care in the birthing centre (even if they would not take her in at 8cm dilated and she and SIL walked round and round the Slade /Bloomsbury areas for over 2 hours to get to the "magic 10"!!) and DH's life was saved by heart surgery in the Heart Hospital (an offshoot of UCLH) 5 years ago.
I do understand your sentiments though. sad

Charleygirl Wed 25-May-16 09:39:59

I have a feeling that the Heart hospital is no longer there. I would not be surprised if it is another block (s) of flats. A friend of my aunt was very well looked after there so it is swings and roundabouts.

Alea Wed 25-May-16 09:51:17

You are right it isn't. I loved that place - well the shopping opportunity which visiting afforded and that very very Scandi noir Nordic Bakery just a couple of doors down!

Charleygirl Wed 25-May-16 09:54:59

I agree, it was well placed but not for the senior medical staff working at the old UCH or the Middlesex.

My mother was treated at the Middx hospital in the late70s and had her radiotherapy treatment there. A team from there went out to Ashford Hospital (Middx) every week I think and performed operations and then did follow up visits. They saved my mother's life and she had another twenty years for which I shall ever be grateful

Ooh italiangirl, when were you there? I started training in 1967. Are you on the two Middlesex forums? If not message me and I can tell you about them.

nanapug Wed 25-May-16 21:41:38

It is so sad that it has gone. It was a wonderful place, at least they have preserved the chapel. That was so beautiful.

My sister was treated there in the 1960s. It was experimental surgery and she had to stay there for weeks at a time. The hospital was brilliant. They gave my mum a job as a ward housekeeper and helped her find lodgings so that she could stay in London with my sister.

tanith and charleygirl- apologies, of course not the same hospital. DH is a UCH boy and had just finished there when I met him- working at the West Mid.
